My school is P/F for all 4 years. How will this impact residency applications? I know the most important criteria for competitive specialties are something like: Step 1 > grades > LOR > research > MSPE > ECs/leadership

So when grades are essentially the same for everyone, what do residencies do and does it negatively impact you? anyone from a similar school with insight on this?

It won't affect you. Just study and work hard like everyone else.

P/F unranked? Some schools are p/f but still keep an internal ranking that shows up on the mspe.

If your school has this unranked P/F 4-year system (and as far as I know, there's only one school quite like this), it's likely that the school's reputation is expected to stand in for the grades part of the equation. The rest of the residency app factors are then heightened in importance.

Consider yourself very fortunate. You get to tailor your entire first 2 years toward Step 1. That is huge.

Is there an internal rank for AOA? I also agree with some of the other points: are shelf grades and class rank included in the dean's letter?

No internal ranking as far as I am aware. Exam scores don't show up on dean's letter. Dean said there's no "secret code" that stratifies students in the dean's letter. My gf graduated from another med school 2 yrs ago where the dean said the same thing, but she says there was clearly a code-like quality to her letter, just based on the way her and her friends' letters sounded. So maybe all Deans just say this

Exactly. If you're at Yale.... uh, you'll be fine.

If it's truly pass/fail with no internal ranking...jackpot. Grades are extremely stressful, especially in M3.

It won't hurt you at all. Your dean's letter explain that your school is pass/fail so PDs will know.

PDs in all likelihood will already know this just from the name of your school.

Translation: I am at a top 5 medical school and want to make sure that residencies know how smart I am but I can't do it through my grades. Help!

nope, not at a top 5 school (top 30 though, well-known name). My clinical evals have all the nice "outstandings" and "excellents" and stuff so I feel like I could've snagged a handful of honors if we were H/P/F, but oh well. No internal ranking according to my Dean. We have AOA but I don't think I'm going to make it.. it's chosen in a very odd fashion.

Could you explain? I'm kind of curious to know how it's done.
