I'm currently enrolled in a not well-known SMP and aced my first semester and was a top performer..I have sent my grades to schools that I am currently applying to and have not even received any interviews..my GPA is the only bad factor in my app (3.3 overall and science)..

What gives? Is one semester not convincing to med schools? This is SO frustrating because I know that once I am in then I can compete with the best...already knew that before enrolling in the program too..😱

In my view, unless you're in a program like Georgetown, which is extremely well known and aggressively supports same-year apps, or in a program like EVMS, which is a slip-n-slide into its own med school, the benefit of a credential-improving program isn't available to you until after you're done with the program year. Even at Georgetown, only 50% of its students get accepted during the SMP year. In an unknown program, you carry the burden of introducing the program to adcoms; prior to completing the program your self-marketing is necessarily rather empty. It's not clear to me how you came to the expectation that your SMP (Mississippi, correct?) would give you the same benefits as a Georgetown - did you follow up on my questions from last summer about this program?

I'm afraid that from an adcom's perspective, unfortunately, this year you're just another late applicant among thousands who are sending new semester grades. At this point in the app year, turnaround on any new information, such as new grades, is going to take 6-8 weeks. That puts you up against the end of interviews.

In your shoes I would blow off this app year, except maybe for U of Mississippi (assuming you're in-state), and I'd be getting ready to reapply on June 1. Be very sure that your assertion is correct that your only red flag is your undergrad GPA.

Best of luck to you.

Do you think this is the case for my 2 instate schools (Alabama)? I know one of them gets about 750 in state apps and interviews around 215..they say they are halfway through the interview cycle..think I stand a chance?

Your state schools are always your best chance. March into the dean's office at your current school, and politely and cheerfully coerce the dean to contact both Alabama schools and sing your praises. Phone calls are fine; letters are better, both are best. Camp out in the dean's office with your textbooks if you have to.

Thanks for the advice. I have had the program dean send letters saying how awesome I did already..I also send a letter to the committee asking for an interview...after no response I emailed the med school's dean of admissions but have no received a reply...I'm thinking of calling but I don't really know what to say anymore without seeming demanding or arrogant..any advice?

Yeah...🙁 I'm finding it increasingly difficult to even care about studying for gross anymore

SMPs suck!

Lesson: Go to a community college and pull a 4.0..it's not like you learn anything useful in undergrad anyways
