International Student (Non-Canadian)

My application was sent out on July 4th.

Got my completion e-mail from NYU on July 20th.

Got my completion snail-mail from UPenn on Aug 20th.

Called both schools last week, and told me its still under review.

Seems like rejection right?

It does seem so.

No news is good news. It took a long time for NYU to get back to me, but eventually they did. I called UPenn this morning and got the same "Under Review" response. Most of my interview offers have been big surprises, (either they were fast, unexpected or right when I had lost hope), so keep your head up! Besides, you've already got 7. 😳

You sir have 7 interviews already.. Be thankful for what you have 🙂

👍 seriously bro dont be a hog! you have a coveted Buffalo interview that most NYers would kill for. so please dont cry over sour grapes.

I know I am a very lucky person, and I really appreciate to have 7 interviews, but kind of disappointed since those were my top choices.

I don't think someone is being a "hog" if they're a little disappointed that they haven't gotten an interview from their top choice(s) yet 😛

lol ok maybe that was mean, but i guess in a sense of having interviews at schools like Buffalo, where everyone would give up their grandmother just to interview lol

I would definitely go to the school if I can get into,
I didn't mean the schools that I have interviewed so far are not good enough.
All of the schools that I interviewed were really nice, friendly, and well-established.
I was only saying that I was little disappointed because I havent heard from my top choices. 🙁

really? i haven't heard this about buffalo either. it's pretty cold in buffalo. it's one of the very few dental schools where you can gain in-state tuition after first year. and for good reason. most new folks get attacked by polar bears during their first winter, which lasts from october to june.

Whenever anyone asks about the weather, the students all reply with, "its not that bad."

"except that day when it was -40 F"

im there to get a good education, not to sunbathe. Buffalo = amazing educational experience. Weather = 4 years of your life, not 50 get over it. im not spoiled and i can suck it up for 4 years. im not going to d-school for the weather lol if i wanted to do that i'd apply to PA school in Florida.

At least students get to ice skate to school.

NYU a top choice? Really? I think it'd be awesome to go there but the tuition OMG 😱😱😱

I wish you luck though OP!! 👍

So true. But I get an impression that UB students are not that into research or specialization, or maybe it's just the students I met. Even the adcom asked specifically about my shadowing experience in general dentistry.. hmm

Four years is a long time. What's wrong with wanting to be comfortable with the climate? I'm not applying to University of The Sun, strictly because I can't stand the heat.

And now you are witnessing two homo sapiens arguing over the climate!

Is a nice climate worth an additional 200K in loans? Hell no! lol

Kudos on getting that many interviews with your stats.

He got a 3.9 in his post-bacc and a 3.5 science GPA, that means something.

thanks for the psychoanalysis! nice political statement you got there buddy 🙄

Out of curiosity Avicii, because you were a non-science major did you take a super heavy science load in your post-bacc? how many units?

I think the reason why adcoms like my application is because I worked full time during the day (more than 40 hours a week) I took 2 science classes at night (4 nights a week) and then on top of that I volunteered at an underprivileged area and shadowed my GP on the weekends. I had no life for the last 2 years, I missed more friends bdays than I can count and I basically caged myself up in my room to study for the DAT (that includes missing my own birthday and not even throwing a birthday dinner)

I took all the basic prereqs + AP I and II + Micro (pending) + Biochem (pending). My sGPA should technically be around 3.6 or 3.7, its lower than that because I bombed Calc and I bombed an entry level Bio course in undergrad. Those grades tanked my sGPA. My BCP is 3.70

I also believe that as a nontrad I have some much more to offer than a 21 yr old college grad (no offense but its true) ive managed a ton of money (millions) in my old profession and I know what it takes to work with people in order to build and maintain relationships.

Hope this helps. (while I may come off as condensing and quick to pull the trigger, I do believe that its best to be honest with yourself and each other. Plus I like to use data and statistics to my advantage. I dont like to turn a blind eye to reality and make decisions based on emotions.)

I should watch that movie again.

thanks buddy! good luck to you! i know you'll be great!

So can I assume you were in some type of banking/finance field? Why'd you decide to leave if you don't mind my asking?

YoonS, I don't know about UPenn, but NYU has a lot of applications so don't loose hope yet! this was last year: my friend submitted in july and she got interviewed in January-Feb so don't worry. With your stats, I doubt NYU would pass over your application. 🙂
