hi guys, just wondering, how in depth do we have to know O chem nomenclature? do we have to familiar with most of the common names for things? also, what about carb acid derivates, etc. do we have to know the nomenclature pretty well? or is just more just simple basic nomenclature?
thanks a bunch

I'm not particularly good with nomenclature and I had no trouble with the nomenclature questions on the DAT. If you know the basics, like count the longest chain, cis/trans, E/Z, and stuff like that, then you'll be fine. Oh and be able to recognize what functional groups would be present by looking at the nomenclature.

it's really not that bad at all. i'm guessing you'll see around 1-2 questions on this topic. like the previous reply says, be familiar with chain length, geometric isomers and some common functional groups. i remember mine having just alkyl groups and a hydroxy group on like a 10C chain. pretty basic stuff. don't forget to study sn1, sn2, etc.! i saw a good number of those and an nmr. for me, i saw quite a bit of synthesis as well so be prepared for that. it's hard to predict what you'll get, my friend. the best approach is to study and learn as much as you can! good luck with your applications and DAT!

Do not sweat the nomenclature (you might get 1-2 questions). Know basics. IUPAC stuff is pretty logical. And even if you don't know it, you can probably eliminate a lot of the wrong choices. Your time could be better spent learning reactions, stereochemistry. 👍

i agree...spend your time on reactions like SN1, SN2, and other main ones. If you do some practice on these other reactions, you'll inherently get some work on nameing/groups, etc.
