Does non-clinical volunteering have to be helping the less fortunate like in a soup kitchen or a homeless shelter? Or can it be any position that’s just not clinical?

I’m planning to volunteer at the airport (Might be working at the information desk or driving golf carts for the parking lot shuttle). Any thoughts on if this will count or not?

Depends on who is looking at your app. But helping people less fortune offers you the opportunity to learn more about how the world works and how you can make a difference.

I think that It must impact you and the community you are helping in a meaningful way. It doesn’t have to be big and life-altering, just meaningful.

Why on earth does an airport need volunteers? You really are not helping the needy in such a role and it sounds like you are displacing someone in a low-wage job. Spend your volunteer time with people who can only dream of having $$$ for an airline ticket.

Same reason why hospitals do. Free labor.

I’ve also done some research in the past about airport and airline economics and its absolutely mind-boggling how difficult it is for an airport to make a profit.

But most hospitals are non-profits and they serve the poor as well as the affluent. Airports do not serve the poor and do not provide services at no-cost for the destitute. You might as well volunteer at the concierge desk at the local Hilton Hotel.

Volunteering at an airport? Why???? This is waste of your time. They should be paying you for that. And it's not service to others.

Service need not be "unique". If you can alleviate suffering in your community through service to the poor, homeless, illiterate, fatherless, etc, you are meeting an otherwise unmet need and learning more about the lives of the people (or types of people) who will someday be your patients. Check out your local houses of worship for volunteer opportunities. The key thing is service to others less fortunate than you. And get off campus and out of your comfort zone!

Examples include: Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, Humane Society, crisis hotlines, soup kitchen, food pantry, homeless or women’s shelter, after-school tutoring for students or coaching a sport in a poor school district, teaching ESL to adults at a community center, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, or Meals on Wheels.

I'm starting to worry about you, Clammy.

I think the anxiety of movement day is getting to me. I promise I’m usually better than this! Please don’t give up on me Goro!!!!

Although I do think volunteering at an airport would be cool on its own as long as it’s not used as a substitute for the other types of required volunteering.

actually, some schools SPECIFICALLY say that they want to see volunteering for disadvantaged population, - health or economically disadvantaged. One of the schools in DC explained to be that health disadvantaged would be volunteering in HIV clinic, for example. But the whole purpose of volunteering is to show your commitment to serve the underserved. Airport is REALLY not it. Waste of time. Dont do it.

plus, SERIOUSLY, - find something that will actually make you feel better about your life, you know? something that will make you feel like you made a difference. Do not be that person who volunteers just to check the box, - there is something very wrong about it, in my opinion. Volunteering changed me a lot, for example. It really opened up my eyes to a lot of things.
