Rising M4 here. I'm pretty sure I want to do ortho, but not 100% sure (at this point, more like 75%). I am thinking of doing a sub-I in another surgical specialty to help me decide. I only have one free block to play with, so my options are to do this other sub-I or another ortho elective/sub-I/away.

How will a non-ortho sub-I look to ortho PDs? Does anyone have any experience?

If you haven't done any other ortho sub-Is then obviously it's bad if you're applying for ortho. But if you've done a couple ortho sub-Is and do say ENT or vascular surgery etc. then I certainly don't think its a problem. Hell it could even help you out during interviews - they ask why you did the specialty and you say that you wanted to explore your interests and found that ortho truly was the specialty for you.

good advice above, also you don't necessarily have to let the PDs know that you rotated in another field. When they ask you where you rotated, tell them the ortho places you went and vice versa. Ideally it would be better to do all rotations in the field as I believe you have a 60-80% chance of matching where you rotate, so the more places the better, but if you truly haven't decided yet a early subi in another field should be fine. But again don't reveal information unless you have to.
