Hey friends I am a premedical non-trad applicant from California aiming to apply to DO school this cycle. I wanted to know your thoughts about my application and whether I have a good shot this cycle. I basically took all my premed reqs in undergrad but didn’t do well in Physics so I took both intro physics again (for MCAT and gpa boost). I am mostly worried because I talked to some of my DO friends as well as seen some of the forums saying that CC credits are looked down upon. Also because I took CC credits AFTER a bad sgpa at a 4 year, but in reality I didn’t and still don’t have much money (paying off loans and need money to apply/interview/etc). I owe like 15k in student loans. Also, COVID happened which put me out of a job for a little while. Please chance me anybody. @Goro I hope to at least get a few interviews.

Undergrad (4 year University of California)

Cumulative: 3.38
Sgpa: 2.84 ish

After taking six classes at CCs during covid (originally started the first class in person), I also took some of these classes at the same time online at different CCs:

Intro/ beginner med bio (3 units) : A
Anatomy 001 (4 units): A
Physiology (4 units): A
Physics 1 (4 units): A
Microbiology (4 units): A
Physics 2 (4 units): A

Total Post Bacc Credits (all science): 23 UNITS (4.0 gpa)

Final Cumulative: 3.43/3.44
Final sgpa: 3.20-3.21
MCAT: 504

1 LOR from DO, two LOR from CC pHD professors, 1 LOR employer, 1 LOR from youth org

I took Micro and Physics together and Physio and Physics together but Anatomy and Med bio alone because of work and scheduling conflicts. I also worked mostly during taking these courses (part time job but some time didn’t work due to COVID) along with volunteering, shadowing, etc. I also studied for the MCAT, shadowed, volunteered, and worked (the whole time). Also when taking courses my grandma passed along with my dog of 5 years along with other loved ones so this time was tough).

Clinical Experience:

-Shadowed two doctors-Both DOs (1 LOR from a DO)- This DO is family practice and practices OMM, the other I just shadowed for a day
-Vaccine Clinic (100+ hours and 1 year as of today)- took temperatures, watched over patients, conversed with patients, let them know when their time was up, filled out paperwork asking about their allergies/health conditions/consent forms, escorted patients to booths
-Volunteered at Community Hospital (50+ hours during 2nd year of college): Opened Emergency room door for patients, located patients when family members were allowed to visit, carried insurance forms to insurance agents, escorted patients in)
-volunteered at government sponsored hospital: (150 hours during high school to 2nd year undergrad): wheeled patients to appointments, conversed with patients about their experiences, delivered medication to different departments, cleaned surfaces, wheeled patients to cars, etc.)

Nonclinical (Community bank and nursing home did for 6 months, others for a year plus)

Youth organization (100+ hours): Helped an intellectually disabled young man get on his feet. Helped him get glasses, food stamps card, a government sponsored home, mentored him, helped him interview and practice with him, was a friend and someone to trust, spent leisure time with him
Community Food bank (50+ hours): delivered food, packaged food orders for the less fortunate, packed warehouse with food donated, helped carry food to their cars
Nursing home (20+ hours): This one hit close to home as my grandma passed. This was very personal as I was able to spend time with an elderly woman who wasn’t in hospice but also wasn’t in good health. Talked with her, shared experiences, relaxed, etc.
Tutoring (paid) (200+ hours) Tutored kids but thoroughly enjoyed the experience, instilled confidence, creatively teached new ways, etc. (One of LOR is from this employer/ strong LOR)

I really hope I have a good shot. The reason I ask is because as I mentioned earlier I don’t have much money but this is my dream and I would like the honest truth as to whether I should apply this year or not. With that being said, what do you think my chances look like? Like a percentage if possible?

Other:

1 year at a Chinese Club (I'm asian): met new friends, bonded with other chinese, learned more about their culture, went to multiple events

Free Time

enjoy photography/video with an old drone my friend gave me, kayaking, hiking, eating new food, playing pickup basketball, running

Have you gone to any recruiting events, including virtual, with DO schools on your wish list? Talked to any current medical students or residents?
I will be attending some of the events in the near future. I finally brushed up and completed what I have said in this post. So now I have some free time besides working. Assuming I go to the events on choosedo.org what do you think my chances look like? Any advice? Thank you for the response by the way.

Sorry, I can't comment on DO schools. I'm just curious about how 23 PB credits can raise your GPAs that much after the general 120 credits needed for an undergrad degree?

I think you should shoot your shot, you've risen your sGPA enough to beat the computer cutoffs at most places. I think you'd get a lot of love from some newer schools. The tricky part in terms of the CC courses is that they are viewed in a subjective manner, one adcom may not care too much but another might. What's done is done though and there is no point trying to go around it unless you want to take more courses at a 4 year near you.

D.O.'s are a bit more forgiving in terms of non-trads, and with a good story I think you can sell yourself well. If they question why you went to a CC for your post-bacc, I think cost and distance are definite factors that should be taken into account and mentioned. You could also email admissions before applying and ask how they would view CC courses.

Thanks so much for the response! What newer schools do you think? Could you please give me a list?

Thank you all for your responses! It means so much! Would you have any other advice? Anything else I should add to my ECs/clinical/etc.?

Make sure you get LOR from 2 science and 1 non-science professors, this was tough for me with COVID. Otherwise your EC seem fine to me, the tricky part is going to be selling your story in your PS and secondaries. Good luck!

Thanks! I actually don't have a non science LOR because I'm a non trad. I'm aware that some schools require it but on prospective doctor it shows that only a few require it. (Correct me if I'm wrong) and it shows that quite a few are sympathetic towards non trads. I do however have 2 Science LoR along with 1 DO lor

Yeah they probably take that into account then, if you encounter any issues you can contact admissions and explain your situation. Each school and app is different, but I'm sure there are others who had a similar path as you and got an exception on that Non-science rec.
