Hello folks,

I am just looking for some advice regarding my application. Here's the meat and potatoes;

School: State university
Grade:Sophomore
Major: Physics
CGPA: 3.90
SGPA: 3.92
MCAT: Have not taken it yet

Experience:
Currently working as a nurse with 4 years of experience. 2 years in LTC and 2 years in Prison.
1 year as a mental health assistant
80 hrs of physician / surgeons shadowing
1 year of volunteer in psych unit
1 year of Bio, Chem and Physics tutoring
1 year Youth leader for local non profit organization
1 year as high school student mentor

Research:
1 year of research in physics lab involving biophotonic

random experience:
2nd degree black belt
Circuit training fanatic

These are the activities I'm currently involve with. I don't join something just for the quantity of it, all these things mean something to me and it's everything I love.

I'm just curious to know if there are any weak spot or something I can improve on.

I live in the northeast and I am aiming hard to gain acceptance into school around the area because of my husband's job. But if worst comes to worst, we will move.

Edit: I would like to apply the end of my junior year. I'm currently studying for the MCAT. My practice exams have been pretty consistent 13 BS 14 PS 11 VS, 13 BS 15 PS 10 VS, 13 BS 14 PS 10 VS, 14 BS 15 PS 10 VS. It's the verbal score that worries me.

Thank you 🙂

As long as you meant "in a prison" not while in prison you are looking good! I like your black belt mention... You seem to be well rounded and as long as you keep everything up I think you will be great. Good luck!

Thank you all!

Again, I am just concern when it comes to verbal. It always seems that people do really well on practice exams but end up getting a few points lower on the actual test. My verbal score has been either a 10 - 11.

The other thing is the schools around my area except for my state university, is very research oriented and mid to top tier schools. I will be applying with almost two years of research at most at the end of my junior year with no publications. I am praying that my state university will show me some love because attending there would help out with everything from my husband not having to commute so far for work and us still being able to keep our place.

Haha yes in a prison. I am a correctional nurse.

I think your verbal score will stay pretty consistent, usually only +/- 1 but if you practice reading constantly (sounds kind of ridiculous but I read articles nonstop) it can help. Your practice scores are excellent but a big part of it is going in on test day and not freaking out. Just be confident...and I know this is a rarity but for some encouragement I felt the same way as you and I went up 8 points from my average to the real thing....you already have an amazing score but you can go higher too!

As far as the verbal section goes, my brother and I were both averaging 11-12 on the practices and ended up with 13 for me, 14 for him, so I wouldn't worry too much about it as long as you're consistent. I have about 2 years of research and no pubs, but still got love from some research-heavy schools.

You seem like a strong applicant for just about any school. Post-interview (since I can't see any reason your state school wouldn't interview you), I would write your state school an LOI and say you would absolutely go if they took you.

I'm just scared because I am border line with every practice exam when it comes to verbal and it doesn't help that English is my second language. And like I said the schools around my area are incredibly research heavy. Hopefully things turn out alright and my state show me some love 🙂

May I ask you how you studied for the verbal portion? Your stats are amazing, btw!
