Hello,

I am just wondering what everyone thinks my chances are. I feel like I have a fairly unique situation. First off, I didn't start college until I was 23. I attended a community college for one year, did well, and then transferred to a good state school as soon as possible. I have taken all of my pre med prerequisites at the 4 year university except English. I got an A in gen chem 1 and 2, A's in English, A's in bio, and an AB in engineering track calculus. All that's left is organic and physics.

During my 3rd semester at university, I enrolled in Organic 1, but dropped after the second exam in reaction to 55 on the test when the average was a 63. I had never gotten that low of a grade on a test in my life.

In retrospect, I wasn't really studying very much and not really sure if I wanted to be a doctor or not. So, I enrolled in anatomy and some of the other pre-nursing courses like micro and developmental psych, because I am positive I want to go into a heath-related field.

One year later, I am really realizing how much I really want to go forward with becoming a physician, and what a mistake it was to drop organic. I have been volunteering at the hospital and joining student organizations focused on community service and leadership. I will also be doing some research before I graduate, and I currently work as a lab assistant in a dermatology lab under the local medical school.

I have two years until graduation with a degree in biology. What do you think my chances are? I am worried that it looks like I just quit at the first sign of difficulty in college. Admissions committees might also see those courses like anatomy and developmental psych and know they are for pre-nursing, and see that as unfocused. If I can do well in organic, physics, and the MCAT will having that dropped course on my transcript affect my chances?

Retake the class and do whatever it takes to get an A. Come up with a better explanation for why you dropped Organic the first time besides "It was too hard." Without knowing your final cGPA and MCAT score it's impossible to predict your chances of getting accepted into medical school, but if you can retake the class and do well, it won't be a significant obstacle to your future. I never bothered to drop classes I didn't like, I just failed them outright, and I've already got two acceptances to DO schools. Just realize that this won't be the last time you fail a test, especially when you face the workload of medical school, and you will need to develop a better response than quitting and dropping the class.

As long as your GPA is ok you'll be fine. If this is the only aberration on your academic record, I doubt you'll even get asked about it most places. I dropped organic in undergrad the first time--granted this was several years before I ever decided to go to med school--and I'm in a US allopathic program. Just finish up strong.
