Any non-traditionals out there interested in doing a PS swap? At this point, my PS is too long and I feel that I have too much in the non-Vet related career part and not enough in the Vet experience part. Would be great if another set of eyes could help me to cut it down.

If you're interested, care to post and then I'll PM you? Or feel free to PM me directly.

Good luck all!!!

I would be interested. I don't know how well I can help you cut it down, but I'll try to help give you some tips/thoughts. I tweaked last year's Personal Statement, which got me an interview. I'm interested in hearing other people's thoughts on it...

Don't have time to be able to do any justice to a read of your PS, but to me the key for a non-trad is to make ALL the non-vet related career stuff relate back to vet med. That way, all your experience is a plus to your application. In that case, it doesn't matter that you talk about non-vet stuff for a large part of the PS, it still applies.

It might sound hard, but it is possible. I had to make a career in finance sound like the perfect prep for vet medicine (i did), and even my hobbies, and other experiences too.

Remember, the goal is to make you seem like an ideal candidate for various reasons, not to tell your life story.

Hope that helps.

I should have absolutely no problem with this....working as a legal secretary/paralegal for 10 years, I've worked with a lot of "animals"!

"working as a legal secretary/paralegal for 10 years, I've worked with a lot of "animals"!" Haha love it Maddiegirl

I talked about my seven years as a field hockey player.. no relation to vet med at all obviously, but tied it into words like "commitment" and "determination"... things I think are valuable to have in vet school.. hope this helps

I'd be interested in doing a PS swap with you. I'm also non-traditional, and just finally got my essay down to just under 5000 characters.
As I shortened it up, I ended up cutting out a lot about my past career.. Hopefully that was an ok decision.

I'm sure I'm not the greatest editor, but I figure the more eyes that read it the better.

I'd be interested in a PS swap with someone as well. Right now, mine is a hodgepodge of random attempts to toot my own horn, and it needs to be tightened up and made coherent. If you're interested in sending me yours, I'll happily edit for the basics and ask about items that look like they could be made stronger.

StartingOverVet I am a non trad currently with career in finance and applying again. I am struggling as to how to re-invent myself through my personal statement. I have written so much stuff thus far for applications but I want to take the approach you've suggested. Would you mind PM'ing perhaps and sharing with me samples/ideas for how to sell myself from finance to vet med?? I would really appreciate it.
