Hello,

I am hoping fellow non-US citizens who have been through the internship process can answer the following questions:

(1) Did you only apply to sites that take either US or non-US citizens? Or only non-US citizens?

(2) Did you use your OPT to work as an intern at CMH (is it even required to use your OPT since internship is part of the phd requirement) and get paid?

(3) How did you apply to post-doc assuming you used your OPT and maxed out the 1 year limit?

Thanks!

(1) I don't believe there are any sites that just take non-citizens. Non-citizens are free to apply to all sites except the federal/VA ones.

(2) What is CMH? It is generally recommended to use CPT for internship - make sure your official dates are shorter than 1 year to ensure eligibility for OPT.

(3) If you've maxed out your OPT then you won't be able to pursue a post-doc in the US. One option is to perhaps stay on at your internship site as a full-time employee and have them apply for a H1-B visa for you. Or marry a citizen.

Thanks!! This is very helpful. I will have to look into CPT then. So even with CPT I won't be able to apply to VA internship sites?

That's correct. To work at the VA you have to be a US citizen.

US citizen or is being a permanent resident (i.e. greencard) sufficient?
