Hi all,
I will be doing a pain fellowship soon. I am trying to line up a job before fellowship starts, however I am having a heck of a time getting in touch with recruiters. No one seems to answer the phone. Interestingly enough it's something I experienced during my previous job search.

I have called and emailed and nothing.

Any suggestions? Becoming very frustrating.

what recruiters/ Firms?
Most I know hound you until you want them to stop calling

Depends - St. John's associates for example have numerous opening in my area. I was previously corresponding with the recruiter and now I've emailed a few times and nothing.

Painrecruiters also - I've called several times and nothing. I also emailed them twice. I don't understand what is happening. I am not listed anywhere as a future pain person.

I think you guys are missing the forest for the trees. If the recruiter is unresponsive, first thing is ABCs (or I guess CABs)

That's actually pretty funny, I'm liking your post.

Interestingly enough, shortly after I made this post, I got a bunch of recruiters calling ha! Either they read this thread or maybe I need to be more patient.

Contact employers directly. You are in a better position if your potential employer doesn't have to pay a recruiter.
If the recruiter is not responding then there is either no job or someone else is about to be hired. Sometimes recruiters advertise jobs that are already filled to find out where you want to work. I agree with above that you are best to contact people directly. You look more
Like a go getter as well.

Sure but sometimes the actual group's information is not posted so can't get that info without the recruiter. And I am on the shyer/introverted side so I am a tad uncomfortable just call calling a group and being like hey are you all hiring? Sigh. I also fear all male groups a little bit so i prefer a recruiter introduction. yes perhaps I'm odd or a little scared as a woman going into a mostly male field. sigh. But alas. I guess I'm doing it. Just need a little bit of a security blanket.

If you're shy then find email address and send your resume instead of a phone call, and a follow up email a few weeks later. I got several interviews this way.

I had one interview from a recruiter and actually the job was posted on gasworks. All of the other recruiter opportunities were for jobs I was wholly uninterested in, despite stating my preferences multiple times. Now I'm still stuck on email and phone call spam lists.

If you are looking for a job after fellowship, and have not started fellowship yet you are probably way too early. Paint practices are likely looking to fill in needs sooner, and they won't give the contact any pain references.

Just email the recruiters for the hospitals in your desired area directly. Private ortho/ns groups will take advantage of you. Private pain groups might be ok.

What state are you looking?

I have heard the whole Ortho group ripping you off but I am PM&R and it appears some groups locally give you partnership in a reasonable capacity. There is also one Ortho group that is very close to me (prob within 30 mins) that has other PM&R peeps working there and it seems they have been there a long time, so can't be that unhappy, and they offer it seems pretty equal grounding. It's possible that some groups might take some advantage of me yes, but I think the whole partnership thing might ameliorate that somewhat. I am not looking to make millions, but rather a comfortable lifestyle with a comfortable income where I can enjoy life, do something I enjoy, in an already very saturated area of the country where I do want to stay bc family is here. If I were to move a few hours from here numerous possibilities would be avaialble.

And yes I have not started fellowship yet - someone mentioned it might be too early? it's possible yes, but I am asking recruiters for groups that might be wanting to hire in 2020. There are some jobs that have not filled and are still sitting there.

I am in IL. So I'm looking for something in IL and NW IN mostly.

My high school classmate and brother in law’s brother is the director of recruitment for Merritt Hawkins. John Flynn, easy to reach on LinkedIn.

Thank you. I will wait on a few emails that I'm waiting on but otherwise might reach out. I'm wondering if perhaps I'm reaching out too early since I haven't even started but thank you again.

No, not too early. I got a stipend the last 4 months of residency and all of fellowship.

Oh nice! Yes that's kind of my goal haha! The whole stipend thing. It's going to be tough to go from nice attending salary --> fellow salary. 🙁. So a little stipend would be nice. Can I ask if it's not too personal, how much your stipend is?

It was $5000/month. They offered me a large first year salary. Basically, moved $80,000 of the money away from that first year salary to fund the stipend. I agreed to pay it back if I didn’t finish the first year essentially. There was a tax advantage to doing that for me as well but since you are making attending money now then that won’t matter.

I tried to PP you about this issue, but yours is not allowing me to be able to do that. Please e-mail us again at [email protected]. We try and make sure to answer e-mails as quickly as possible. I am concerned that yours went unanswered. We do not have anything in the inbox from someone e-mailing us twice, and I don't have any unanswered phone messages. Thank you.

You know I have submitted my CV to a few groups that seem to actively be looking in my area (through recruiters) and not getting any bites. It seems that most of the groups are preferring someone to start sooner rather than later. I was hoping to be able to get some sort of residency stipend as stated, but no luck. What made the group you signed with wait for you? Even when I was looking at straight rehab jobs when I was in my 4th year of residency, one of the recruiters for PM&R job told me they wanted something to start in the next few months. I wonder if it's region dependent or something?

Rural Oklahoma hospital. They can’t recruit new physicians without doing things like this.

I see. I am applying in a reasonably saturated area - I have applied for a few jobs but it seems that the groups want to hire someone now - not later. I communicated with the recruiter today and he mentioned that the market might shift soon after summer and groups who cant hire 2019 fellows might look at 2020 fellows - but it seems that I am early as no one is biting.

Private groups are looking for someone now, hospitals don’t mind waiting as much.

That could be - so far I am 0/3. I applied for a hospital and was told they'd look at my CV. I am getting nervous.

You have time. You are in a good position to wait for the right job to come along. Better to wait for the right job than Just commit to something now that’s not ideal just to have something locked in. Fellowship comes with many opportunities to network.

I will be honest and say I am not a networker - not for med school, not for grad school, not for residency, not for my current positions. I am a petite gal, kind of shy, not the typical tall extroverted dude - so networking does not really work for me. I landed my current PM&R gig and despite my belly aching at some points, it is by far the best possible job I could have asked for overall given my current personal situation. So I am hoping to find a good gig not necessarily via networking but rather my typically mode of operation - applying. Sigh. The thought of networking kind of terrifies me. I know I know. :\

I don’t mean networking as in schmoozing I mean networking as in asking your faculty, who you will work with every day, “hey, I’m interested in this area. Know anyone?” Chances are they do, and it behooves them to see you get the best possible job because when you excel it grows their program’s reputation.

My fellowship is in FL and I will be working in IL which is horribly saturated for the most part. I am doing a non-ACGME program too. I mean there are clearly jobs available I think the timing seems a little off - I even asked a recruiter for a job in NW IN which is driving distance without even sending my qualifications and the guy told me that they want to hire someone now, although since the practice is expanding next year they might consider me, but for right now it seems they want someone to be hired soon. Another recruiter told me the same - practice could not wait. Which I understand.
