Okay, so, I'm kind of freaking out.

I filled out my AMCAS application a while back and its already been submitted and processed and its all good.

However, I just noticed I did not put my shadowing experience on there. Although I was aware of this at the time, I now wonder if it was alright that I left it out. I have over 200 hours of shadowing experience, but there was not really a way to list it on the AMCAS application, due to the lack of a "shadowing" option and the fact that I did not want to list like eight doctors.

I did end up mentioning it briefly in my personal statement, however.

Edit: I also have a letter of rec from a physician I shadowed...

Did I screw myself over? Or will it be okay? 😕😕😕😕

You should probably start applying to fast food restaurants. Your life is over.

Calm. Down.

You should be able to highlight the shadowing experiences in your secondaries, and you can also send update letters explaining your ongoing clinical involvement once you get deeper into interview season. You can also talk about it in your interview. There are still plenty of opportunities to discuss your activities.

I mean, I also have a letter of recommendation from a doctor I shadowed.

Looking back at the AMCAS application, I think I just didn't realize it was applicable to the Activities section since it wasn't really something I could consolidate into one experience.

I still want to hear what other people think though...

At this point, your only hope of being a doctor is to be reincarnated and not make same mistake again or Caribbean...

Seriously though, can you actually change it now? No. So stop worrying.

Besides, you used it in your PS and a physician LoR which makes it even more obvious.

See, that's what I was thinking. I guess I'm just used to being told that med schools kind of just "breeze over" applications, and that, since my shadowing experience was mentioned in my personal statement, that they might miss it. It's not like I really broke it down by doctor in my personal statement, either--rather, I just mentioned the total hours I had acquired....

Just talk about your shadowing in an update letter. Do you have any clinical experiences listed on your application? The only way I could imagine it might hurt you is if you have no other clinical experiences listed and don't write an update to include your shadowing experiences.

Edit: FWIW, I didn't include shadowing on my application and got three interviews anyway, but I had several years of clinical work listed (I'm a non-trad.) I was only asked about the omission at one of my interviews.

Edit edit: missed the bit about the physician LOR. You're cool dude, stop sweating.

He was being sarcastic about Carrib. Are you for realzies? :scared:

Specifically, what does an update letter entail and who do I sent it to? Would that even be worth doing for me since I had mentioned my experience in my personal statement and that I have a letter of recommendation from a physician I shadowed?

100% srs. All the time. O_O

I see your O_O and raise y-...ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD.

Update letters are sent directly to adcoms at the schools you apply to and are used to do exactly that - update them on new developments over the course of your application year. Since you have a letter from a doc you shadowed and you mentioned it in your PS, you're probably fine and I wouldn't worry about it.

Classic. 😀

So...do I have to do that on my own? Or through AMCAS? Or something?

And yeah, I'm probably not going to do it though, since I do have it mentioned in my PS and a letter of rec.
