Im planning on transferring to California State Northridge next year from my community college. I know its not USC or UCLA. So what im asking is if thats looked down upon by dental schools when it comes time for admission?

Thanks for all your help!

It's what you do at the school not where you went to school. Make the most of it at northridge.

A's are A's as long as they come from a 4 year institution.

I did hear from an admissions director however that they sometimes see lower DAT scores with comparable GPAs when comparing lesser known schools to the more reputable schools. In this case, he was specifically speaking about CSUs verses their top feeder UC's.

What this means for you:
Do well on your DATs to back up your GPA and you're set!

CSUN is my alma mater and by far one of the main reasons I was accepted into dental school. It has a fantastic bio department with classroom size barely over 30 people large, teachers who are accessible and friendly and fantastice research opportunities! If you are a bio major, i not only reccomend but tell you to do reasearch with Dr. Oppenheimer. I was in his research lab for 3 years and was a research team leader for two of those years and was published seven times (twice is FASEB journal!) . Not only do you get published but you do great research with cancer drugs and pharmeceuticals. Also, go to the Klotz student health center and volunteer at the CSUN-UCLA dental clinic with Dr. Sun. He will give you priceless advice, opportunities to assist and get hands on experience n the dental setting. My interviewers were very impressed with my research and dental experience, aside from my good grades. I got amazing letters of rec from my instructors and earned a wonderful undergrad foundation which is helping me out now as a first year at Tufts dental. Please PM me if you have further questions about CSUN! 🙂

Go to Northridge! I wish I had... It'll be easy to get a really great GPA... I did a semester there after getting my BS in bio from UCI... The UCs have a lot of unnecessary competition while there is less competition at CSUN... So get a really high GPA at CSUN, kill the DATs, and you should have a relatively easy time getting into dental school.... goodluck

I agree with Ehhh,

I went to UCSD, and there is a ton of competition... I think at Northridge you should be able to boost your GPA up and as long as you do well on your DATs you should have no problem getting in. Don't forget to do extracurriculars too...

AFAIK, CSUN has a very good reputation amongst the other CSUs. You're not hurting yourself by going there.

I am about to start my last semester at CSUN. It has been an awesome school. Really there has been no competition in the classroom, while at the same time the teachers are great at preparing you for the DAT. I got several interviews/acceptances from CSUN.

Good Luck
