Northwestern anyone?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interviewed at Northwestern on 5-7 December and was accepted on 11 January (IIRC).

They claim to make most of their decisions after their interviews are over, which I thought was in January but which now seems to be in February. I was there in December and haven't heard back yet.

I bet I'm wait-listed or even rejected.

I'm trying to remain optimistic about Northwestern. My fiancee just got an interview there for the IGP program, so now the pressure's on me to get accepted...

Thanks for the info

I chant to myself...patience is a virtue

For anyone who was there in February...how big was your applicant group? Also, did they give you any more concrete info as to when they would be making decisions? Thanks.

has anyone yet heard from northwestern? I thought their meeting was on Tuesday.

I'm dyin' here. Word is they're supposed to let us know by the end of this week, but I'm not sure if that'll come true.

pre-allo says the website now says acceptance

Which website? The only status page I know of is for the MSTP, and it just says they received my application and letters of reference.

yeah, i couldnt log into the regular MD site, and the MSTP status check doesnt have decisions

Well the MSTP decisions can't be far off if the med school is done. By the way, Marc, I think we have a mutual friend at McGill named Tim. Not to be a stalker or anything . . . good ole Facebook.

No one yet this week (of SDNers), really? This is the info I heard as well. Does anyone know whether they are sending decisions by email or snail mail?

no idea.

word on the pre allo threads is that they accepted some people via online status checker, then changed the message. i feel bad for them, because thats a really lousy thing to endure if you're waiting and neurotic like most of us are.
anyway, yeah, that probably doesnt affect all of us, so i suppose we just have to wait

Yeah, but it seems like the acceptances were real, but they accidentally updated them too early (i.e. they wanted to make sure the acceptees had their letters by snail mail before changing their online statuses). Either way, the decisions for MD have all been made, meaning the MSTP just has to make their own decisions based on this. I`m guessing if we don`t hear today, it will be early next week.

I emailed them last week regarding my application and they still haven't responded. 🙁
I have been accepted to other program, but I really liked their school.

Who are you trying to contact at Northwestern? I have found the director himself to be extremely responsive to emails.

Ives..thanks for the response. We'll see how this goes 🙂

I'm on alternative list. 🙁

yeah, this bodes poorly for the rest of us... oh well.

Yep, heard nothing since I interviewed all the way back in October.

i haven't heard anything yet either.Seems like the rejection letter is in the mail

i must be waiting for a rejection too then. meh, i regret the plane fare.

So what's the deal with this school? They are so mysterious!

I'm wait-listed 🙁
Does anyone know if they have rankings for the wait-list?

If you email Dr. Engman, he's very nice and very quick about responding. I emailed and was informed that I'm at the top of the waiting list. However, it doesn't necessarily matter because in order to get in, I need one of the two international students with offers to withdraw.

There's a separate waitlist for international students? I'm international student too. 🙁 Dr. Engman told me I have less than 50% chance of getting in. I hope both of the international students get into Harvard or something and withdraw. Do you know how long the international student waitlist is? Only two int'l students can be accepted this year?

Yeah, unfortunately they can only take two internationals per year because we're not funded by the NIH grant. It's the same waiting list all applicants, but we only get taken off if the student who withdraws is international. For example, if an American withdraws, they take the first American off the waiting list. If an international student withdraws they take the first person (American or international) off the waiting list. At least, that's how I think it works. Maybe if you ask, he'll tell you your position on the list. Best of luck!

I think I've fallen off of Northwestern's radar...maybe its time for me to politely withdraw...

Ahh, I got that mass waitlist email this morning. I think I might have to give up on the dream and withdraw. My wife was rejected from the IGP anyway, so I probably wasn't going to be able to convince her to come to Chicago and try again next year. I guess now all I'm waiting on is a decision from Harvard and I'll finally be able to figure out what I'm doing next year... Good luck to you guys at Northwestern.

Best of luck to you too, sternum17. Is Northwestern your top choice?:luck:

Thanks! It's in the running with Wash U (also waitlisted) and Penn (waiting to hear), though if I get into Penn right away (however unlikely) I'll accept the offer.

Good luck to you too! If I hear anything from Dr. Engman I'll let you know.

Do you know when the waitlist will start moving? I heard that the MD waitlist usually move after May. Does the MD/PhD waitlist move any earlier? I don't have any acceptance to medical school yet. I'm accepted to Penn & WashU neuroscience PhD and waitlisted at WashU MD and a UVM MD/PhD. I don't know what to do now because the PhD people want my answers in April. 🙁

First off, congratulations on your PhD acceptances!

The waitlist moves as soon as someone with an offer withdraws. People with offers have until May 15 to withdraw from all but one school at which they're accepted, so people sometimes have a tendency to hang on to their acceptances as long as possible. I suspect that a lot of the people with offers from Northwestern are waiting to hear from schools like Penn and Harvard (has Harvard given acceptances yet?), and once they get in, they'll withdraw. To be honest, I don't see the waitlist really moving until April. Do you know by when in April the grad schools are requiring you to accept? Maybe you can ask them to give you a little more time. You could also try bugging Dr. Engman a bit to see if he suspects anyone might withdraw soon.

One other problem I see is that it's likely that international students, the ones we need to withdraw, are likely to be applying to Canadian schools, if they're Canadian like me. Canadian schools tend to do things later - in fact, MD offers for many schools aren't actually made until after May 15. This could delay things if the ones with the Northwestern spots are Canadian, and waiting to hear from Canadian schools.

It's an incredibly complicated situation. I don't really know what advice to give other than to contact the people in charge and tell them your problem.

I guess I'm lucky (?) enough not to have any grad school acceptances to worry (?) about, so I'm just (im)patiently waiting.

I emailed Dr. Engman. He said the waitlist might move in early April. It's not too bad. 🙄

I also emailed Penn and WashU, but they haven't emailed me back. I'm guessing the final deadline for me to reply to PhD program is April 15 or earlier. I know it's April 15 for all PhD programs across the US. Yet, to make things even more complicated, I actually got accepted into the 2007 entering class, but I deferred a year. I'm not sure if they will have a different deadline for me.

Do you think the MD/PhD waitlist will move faster than MD waitlist? Do Canadians usually prefer to go to Canadian med school than US med school?

It varies from person to person. I'd rather go to the States, but I know people who prefer to stay in Canada. I also don't think there's any reason to believe the MSTP waitlist would move faster than the MD waitlist. It might move faster, but I doubt it would have much to do with the fact that it's an MSTP waitlist. Apparently the Wash U waitlist likely won't move until May. Anyway, from what I have heard, waitlists are chaotic things - they behave differently every year, and there's pretty much no way to predict them. In your case, I guess I would be patient for a little longer, and as the deadlines for your PhD programs approach, contact the various directors again.

Also, whom are you contacting at Wash U? If you email Brian Sullivan, the coordinator, I find he's incredibly helpful and responsive.

Hey guys, just a heads up, Dr. Engman just emailed me letting me know that Northwestern is going to make a couple more offers next week. I'll be withdrawing, but best of luck to you guys!

And sternum17, did we happen to have a long discussion about planes and conveyor belts on facebook? 😵
