Hey everyone- just wondering if anyone (?UCLAMan) has opinions on Northwestern's program. I had heard from some that it was pretty malignant and the residents are mean and overworked. Just wondered if there was any truth to this or not. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks! 😀 😎

actually...i can't say that i have any experience with other programs so i cannot really compare. however, i do not think the residents are overworked. its still an 80 hour week...there is a ngihtfloat system in place...and the program does a good job of getting the residents out when their shift is up. the interns and residents are all pretty nice and have been helpful to me. however, there are indeed people who say that some of them are mean...i really think it depends on who you talk to. but personally, i dont think any of the residents are "mean."

the new prentice women's hospital is opening next spring and is going to be awesome. i really dont see anything bad about the program. the faculty is world class. research opportunities are abundant. the sky is the limit here in my opinion. the fact that we have our own women's hospital that has 30 delivery rooms and 4 section ORs may make things busy but the numbers are great. there are also 6 more operating rooms for the general gyne, gyn-onc and urogyne cases. but i still do not think anyone is overworked or that the program is malignant in any way.

where did you hear the our program was "malignant?"

I have heard that a majority of the patients at Northwestern are private - is there still autonomy for the residents? Otherwise, I have heard great things about the program...Thanks for your help!

there is a residents clinic that is run solely by the residents(overseen by different attendings each day who basically just sit there and let the residents do everything). the patients are all public aid patients anywhere from pregnant 12 year olds to post menopausal women.

on labor and delivery, the residents get all the forcep or suction deliveries for sure. they manage essentially all the patients on the floor. some attendings deliver their own and sew them up the lacerations themselves. but with almost 30 delivery rooms which are usually all full on any given day, there are more than enough attendings who let the residents do everything, from executing delivery maneuvers to sewing up lacerations. there are also usually plenty of the resident clinic patients each day who are managed completely by the residents from the moment they set foot on LnD to the moment they get discharged from the hospital.
