im having trouble responding to the questions of how nu's organ based approach will help me learn.....its not like another way wont help me learn...and doesnt every class do organ based? thats how my school taugt everything... 😕 😕 :scared: any suggestions?

when all else fails... check it out on the internet!!! Do some research... think about it.. they know we don't know too much about it, but they'd like to see us put what we want to get out of the little part we do know about!!

Yeah, I looked online to learn more about it. And no, not every school does systems-based learning.

oh, its not that i dont know what the organ based approach is, ive read nu's curriculum year by year several times....its just that im having the specific problem of how it will help me learn....do you get what i mean??

hmm..well...first off...do u prefer organ based or non-organ based systems? and if u prefer organ based then how do u think it is better than non organ based? the questions u are posing make it sound as though you dont really know what "organ-based" means.

its like like black and white, night and day, vanilla or rocky road...u must have a preference...in this case they give you the side u are to argue. all u have to argue why u like organ based...and if u dont like it compared to non organ based then u better come up with some BS to say u like organ based.

u know...i wish more people on sdn had this philosophy.

judging from whats happening on sdn i can only imagine what people are putting down as their answers to these questions. makes me wish i signed up to be on the adcom...then again...maybe not because then maybe reading some of the answers might get me really frustrated.

well, i thought of something to say, thanks for the responses....i dont think i worded my questions well enough to get my real concern across....but thank you guys

so basically the way an organ based curriculum works is that your units and exams are broken down by organ. For example, during the GI unit you learn everything about the GI. By everything I mean you are learning the physiology of the GI system, learning the histology of the GI system, dissecting the GI system, etc.

At some schools all of these subjects(by "subjects" i mean physio, pharm, path, histo, etc.) are separate. For example, at UCSD anatomy is a 10 week course and you dissect the whole body in 10 weeks and their dissections dont necessarily coincide with the appropriate organ so they may be getting lectured about the brain but may be dissecting the bladder, whereas at NU we are dissecting the brain during the neuro unit where we are learning the physiology of the brain. At non organ based schools they may be learning about the physiology of the pancreas in their physiology class and learning about the pharmacology of the kidney in their pharm class.

So organ based breaks down its units based on organ system whereas non organ system breaks down its courses based on subject(ie, physio, pharm, path, histo, anat, etc.)

i like the organ based system because u learn everything about a particular organ so all the relevant informationabout the heart(by relevant info i mean u are getting the physio of the heart, dissecting the heart, pharm, path etc.), for example, is integrated together. I think it gives a better big picture view of what you are learning.

For people having trouble understanding the differences I hope that helped somewhat.

Wends - I think I got what you were trying to say. It's not that you don't understand what the organ-based curriculum is, it's just that never having experienced it, it's hard to say why it will help you learn better over another system. I know you said you already came up with an answer, but I'm just going to try to think up the pros and cons of both types of curriculum and imagine myself experiencing both. I definitely think organ-based is better for me because you get the big picture instead of having to put bits and pieces here and there together yourself.

Just wanted you to know someone out there is pickin' up what you're puttin' down 😉

Mind you, you're in the PRE-allo forum. We're not first years, we're aspiring first years, so please excuse yourself.

YOU may be an aspiring first year but lets just say that not everyone in pre-allo is aspiring anymore 😉 ...and i wasnt referring to you anyways...so please excuse YOURself.

I hate people that do this on websites, but I just want to point out that you mispelled "farm" a few times in your posts.

more or less what uclaman said, although the curriculum is not as streamlined as presented. for example, during the #4cvrr(cardiovascular, respiratory, renal) units, there was basically no lab... that is, we weren't dissecting the heart or looking under microscopes at nephrons... that was all done in an earlier unit... it all fits together in the end tho

yes...I'm a PRE-allo too but I got what UCLAman was saying. Thanks for the push!

btw uclaman...what HS did you go to? I'm from Corona too...went to Santiago.

Just be honest and tell them how you dont care and that 2ndary application questions are useless.
