Northwestern Post-bac Pre-med 2011?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hello! I was accepted last year for Fall, and due to personal issues was unable to complete the 2 pre-req's in time (more than 5 years had lapsed since I took algebra and bio). I am hoping to complete the pre-req's this summer, and possibly begin this Fall. Much of my hesitation has also come from the lack of information and feedback on the program. Although I never struggled much with school, I have been out of college now for nearly 10 years, and I wonder if I still have what it takes to succeed, especially given the caliber of Northwestern and the robust nature of this program. I wonder if I am crazy to opt for a more challenging program such as this, vs an easier program. However, working full time, I am very much drawn to the evening and weekend format. I just wish I had a bit more real-life feedback on the program!!

I will hopefully be there in the fall! I have a conditional acceptance but I am finishing up Calculus in two weeks 🙂!

Is it conditional, contingent on your calculus grade? I also had conditional acceptance, contingent on my algebra grade because I'm not NEARLY as brave as you are!

Either way, I'm sure we'll see each other this fall! I already have my classes in my Northwestern "shopping cart" on Caesar, haha.

Did you go to the information session offered? I thought it was very thorough in regards to what we can expect from the program and the kind of services offered, and they also had alumni of the program come in and talk to us about what they'd gotten out of it. If you have a chance, get to one of those info sessions because they're extremely helpful.

I'm sure that you have what it takes to succeed! Everything that I've read about the professors, the structure of the classes, etc., leads me to believe that if you have the drive, you can absolutely succeed in this program...let's just hope I'm right!

Right! I am done with my course on July 18th, hopefully I can get my info in ASAP. Are you doing the one year plan or fifteen month plan? I didn't go to an information session-- so I feel like I have a million questions @_@

I'm actually doing the six quarter plan! So I'll take chem and physics for the fall, winter, and spring quarters, have my summers off, and then take ochem and bio for fall, winter, and spring of 2012-2013. This was really the only way I could do it and work full-time, which isn't negotiable (unfortunately 🙁).

I did not attend an information session, but sounds like I should have as that may have alleviated my fears! I did a ton of research online, the best I could, and felt like this was the best option for my situation, as I, too, will have to continue to work full-time throughout the program.

I haven't gone to an information session either. I've been trying to do a lot of online research but haven't found many resources. Do either of you have additional info that I could access? That would be great! I am doing the 12 month plan and I'm super nervous! I am also nervous about not knowing anyone!

When I was first considering the program last year, I searched this forum and was able to find some reviews and feedback threads, but, there was not an abundance of info, nor was it very recent. I will see if I can locate those old posts and let you know. I had been accepted to the Loyola program as well and one advantage is that they do not require the bio and algebra pre-req. I mean, I took both as an undergrad, but Northwestern requires those to be taken pretty recently. I also am nervous about not knowing anyone!! Are you guys local?

Congratulations on getting into the Loyola program! That's really awesome. I am not local actually, I am from MN. One other friend is going to Chicago, but she is starting a doctoral program at Loyola for School Psychology. How about you?

I don't have any additional info, but I've bugged the Northwestern admissions office enough that I feel like I might be able to answer maybe a COUPLE questions, haha. But don't worry about not knowing anyone...we'll all be in the same position. I finally got signed up for classes and I'm nervous about the rigor, but SUPER excited, and I'll bet everyone else is too. 🙂

I'm local!

I also have a conditional acceptance! I just took my Bio and Algebra finals today (talk about coming down to the wire).

I'm having trouble finding much info/feedback on NU's program... I went to 2 info sessions and have bugged both the admissions counselor and an academic advisor with questions, but I still feel like I don't really know how highly regarded the program is to some of the top med schools. It seems like on this forum the same few school names keep coming up, and Northwestern isn't one of them...

i got in for january, how are u guys liking it? im prob gonna go

I haven't seen much about it, but is anyone heading to Northwestern this fall for their post-bac pre-med program?

If so, I'll see you there! :highfive:

Hey there racataca, I just got accepted and hope to be starting in the fall 2012. I was hoping you could maybe share some insight on the program? How are you liking it? Any information would be really appreciated as it seems no one on sdn can tell me much about the program currently :/

Any updates on this program? Likes or dislikes? Considering applying for next Fall or Summer.

I‘m on the same boat. Plan to finish the bio and math pre-req this year and apply for next fall.

Can I take other college level math (e.g. finite mathematics) instead of algebra? I took linear algebra 6 years ago...

Bump for interest!

Anyone here actually go through NU's post-bacc? I'd love to hear from you! I'm from Chicago area and would need to take their pre-reqs in Spring 2013 but I'm looking at a Fall 2013 entrance. Thanks!!
