Northwestern University Open House

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I went! Thought it was very informative, but the program also very expensive...anything in particular you're interested in hearing about? I liked the structure of the clinical experiences (esp. the clinic visits alongside a 2nd year and faculty member beginning end of September), and I also liked all the students I met. While it's probably true that only students happy with the program would volunteer to help out with the Open House, everyone I talked to seemed excited and genuinely glad to be there.

Anyone else? I too would be interested in hearing everyone's thoughts!

To be completely honest I was not even considering NW because of the cost. But you are absolutely right, I was blown away by the faculty and students. The only reason I can think of for not going there is the high tuition. This is going to be a tough decision. Are you going to attend or are you considering another school?

Best of luck! I'm deciding between UW Madison and NU. 😕

I didn't have Northwestern very high on my list before the open house, solely because of the tuition. But I was SO impressed by the open house! They really did an awesome job. I loved the ideas Jules Dewar had about being able to influence the way physical therapy is done and seen by other medical professionals by allowing us to collaborate with each other so they can see how competent physical therapists are. And the critical thinking aspect of the program, instead of using rote memorization to treat problems. Not to mention that all the professors were experts in their fields with lots of clinical experience. The open house made it a VERY hard decision for me, especially since their deposit is a pretty large chunk of change that I wouldn't want to lose unless I was absolutely sure.

Yup I cannot think of anything I did not love about the program. The only thing holding me back is thinking about the amount of debt I will incur. The thought of paying back loans for 10+ years isn't very enticing. But then again I am not completely sold by my state school so that makes this decision extremely tough.

I have been accepted to NU, but was unable to attend the Open House. All this information is so helpful! Where do most students live?

Congrats! 🙂 They gave out a big packet of information in our folders during the Open House. I bet if you email them (maybe Angela?), she can probably send you a pdf version of the file. It's an updated version of the pdf they send when you request information via the website, with statistics from the past 5 or so years on where students live, how they commute to school, how much they spend on books, where they like to study, how many hours they study, etc.

From what I gathered (others please chime in if you heard otherwise), I think most students live within a 30ish min radius of NUPT...ranging from right in Streeterville (where NUPT is) to the Lakeview/Lincoln Park area, and a handful of students whose families are in the Chicago area live at home. Having roommate(s) brings rent down significantly if you want to be really close to school. I also heard one student who preferred living alone still managed to find a studio for something like $800/mo.

Yeah the debt is the big black cloud over my head as well. Truth be told, if it was more cost-comparable to other schools I would have accepted right then and there. But as I have a big interest in neuro I think going to NU would allow me to have the job I want to make a career out of when I graduate, which is important to me. But....I absolutely hate the thought of being tied down by so much. So many decisions.

I agree with the last poster about where people lived. One current student that presented during the financial aid portion of the open house said she paid $550 a month living with roommates, which is way less than I was expecting! But another girl I talked to lived by herself right downtown and was paying $1400/month so it all depends on your preferences.

Cost is indeed holding me back from Northwestern. I believe I will attend one of my cheaper state schools. There is a lot of uncertainty in my state about reimbursement, and if all goes to hell, I don't want to be stuck with a 6 figure debt.

Good luck to everyone making their decisions. I am very thankful to have made it into several programs and believe that I will be a good PT no matter where I go as long as I put the work in.

If I had better state school options I would probably go the same route too. Good luck in school and congrats on your acceptances!
