I’m posting under a new name to remain anonymous.

I’m an MS4 applying to EM this year and have just come off of the residency interview trail. I would prefer to train at a 4 year academic EM residency program. My goal is to enter academic EM straight out of residency or go into a fellowship. I’m working on ranking my top three choices (Northwestern, Beth Israel (BIDMC), and Michigan) and wanted to hear others’ opinions of these programs.

I’m more interested in what people think of the quality of training and job prospects post residency. Location isn’t a priority for me and I’d be more than happy to live in Chicago, Ann Arbor, or Boston for 4 years.

I know in the end this will be my decision, but I was wondering what input others had on the topic.

Why do 4 years if you're planning fellowship? That'll put you at 6 or more by the end, which is a lot of lost retirement on the back end...

I trained at Michigan and also ranked BIDMC very high. The new program director at michigan was one of the assistants when I was there and she is awesome. I got great training. I'm now at a community hopital but many of my classmates went academic

Recent BI grad here... I think the training is top notch. You already know about the option to do a supported 4th year... or you could finish in 3 and do a formal fellowship elsewhere (or here). The flexibility is very nice. In general, I think our grads are doing well finding jobs/fellowships they want, both academic and community.

I didn't interview or train at your other locations, so I can't help with any comparison. Feel free to PM with questions.
