Just looking for a little insight from my fellow SDNers. I'm about to drop OChem I this summer, its shaping up to be a pretty poor grade, maybe a C- if I can really step up this last half.

I'm a non traditional student who graduated a few years ago without any of the science pre reqs with a 2.8 gpa and a Comm Major. Obviously I wasn't all that motivated to do well durring this time.

Last year I went back to school and took
Chem (B)
Bio (B+)
Chem II (B+)
Bio II (A-).

Sgpa ~ 3.3.

Question at hand, if I take this 'W' should I just start looking at Medical Sales Jobs or try and retake the course and go for it. I know perseverence pays, but I don't want to be going down a dead end. I feel due to my academic history I feel I have to do even better in these upper level courses. Let me know what you guys think.

The "W" is not what is going to hurt you. More than anything you are going to have to repair your overall gpa of 2.8. I am not going to tell you to give up on your dream and go for medical sales, but just taking the pre reqs will not cut it.

Your journey to dental school will probably take at least a couple years of post bac work and possibly a masters. You just have to determine if that is worth it you. Good luck with your decision. 😀

if you had a solid undergrad GPA, the answer would be simple: just get approximately the same GPA in your science classes and you would be ok. However, lets say you get a 3.3 in the rest of your science classes. Your overall GPA would be around a 3.0, science GPA a 3.3, non-science a 2.8. These grades are below average for ACCEPTED students in 2010, so take that for what it is. You would probably have to take another year of undergrad classes to fluff your overall.

Thanks for the replies guys, but from what I have gathered through countless threads is that adcoms look at your post bacc gpa differently than your overall gpa (especially if you take all your science courses as post bacc). With that said, I am expecting to end up with a sgpa of +3.3 and an overall somewhere a little above 3.0. Hopefully a solid DAT (deal with that when I deal with that). So with that said if anyone has been in my position and had to take a W, I would greatly appreciate some insight on the matter if that would hurt me.

Schools will want an explanation for why you withdrew but it won't kill your app. Make up for it by aiming high on the O.Chem section of the DAT. Or... you could bust your butt and rock your final, then get an A in O.Chem II... that would be best.
