Not matching trends

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
kinda realized it wasn't really for me hindsight,

Might they have picked up on this during your interviews? Maybe it was a horribly painful blessing in disguise?

People sometimes use psych as a backup. That comes through when there's no demonstrated interest. Not saying that's what happened to you, but even you don't think it was a good fit in retrospect.

Also, the first two examples you posted had multiple Step failures. Another only ranked 5, one in California. No real surprises there.

And yeah, it is getting harder. The percent of non-AMG matching is falling, less than 30%. That's worse than IM.

Why? Probably because the number of AMG graduates has dramatically increased but GME funding has only really increased for primary care. Nobody wants to do primary care, so that's having a crowding-out effect on other specialities for less competitive AMGs. (Just to be clear, I think very highly of primary care specialists, but it's a horrible job in the US compared to other countries ). The IMG match rate remains the same, but there's a redistribution of the imported workforce into FM or IM.

Are you FMG? Is English your second language (some of your grammar and syntax in your post is off, makes me wonder about your writing and verbal skills that are very important in psychiatry).

I don't know how anyone can fake interest in any specialty, especially psychiatry - consider who is interviewing you - a bunch of shrinks.

How strong an applicant were you?

Don't forget that psychiatrists interview people for a living. Any problems with your interview technique will be magnified in a way that carries through to every single programme. If you're applying to psychiatry again, perhaps you should focus on interviewing. Maybe tape yourself and get other people's feedback? It's a skill like any other and gets better with deliberate practice.

Your credentials were probably good enough. After all, you got 8 psych interviews plus 2/10 interviews for FM applying in late November. That seems like a good sign for this next cycle. I hope it goes well for you!

When people post about not matching, I suspect they arent telling us the whole story. I wouldnt put any weight in what other random strangers post on the internet. Focus on yourself and making your application stronger for next year.
