  1. Dental Student
I graduated from SUNY Buffalo Dental School in May and my plan was to move back to Florida, take the boards, and find a job. I didn't realize that they made the Florida boards impossible to pass if you were trained out of state. So long story short I have taken the boards twice and they failed perfectly acceptable work both times. 😡 So now it is July 29th and I have no idea what to do. I would like to jump into some kind of residency so that I can go back to New York and practice but I don't know if it is too late for that. I am stuck. Has anyone been in this situation, or have any idea what I can do. I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks.

Do a residency and then try again? Sorry for the intrusion but I thought it was very interesting that the dental florida boards are also one of the hardest on new dentists. The same is true for us optometrists. It is almost impossible to pass. The reason for this is a lot of people want to work there because it is a great state with no state income tax, excellent weather and a large geriatric population that requires extensive work.

The exam isn't just difficult, it is IMPOSSIBLE. I know a dentist who has been practicing for 26 years who came down and took the Florida boards and they altered his work to fail him. It is a very unethical test if you come from out of state. As far as residency goes, I would love to do one but is it too late? I really don't want to take an entire year off.

You can take the NERB for Florida now. Check the Florida Dental Board for licensing requirements. If you already took it before Oct 2011, it won't qualify though and you'll have to take it again. If you want a residency in NY and have no qualms about going ANY where, then I would call all the programs and ask each if they have an empty spot. You need to do it ASAP because there is a required # of hours you must complete for CODA purposes.

It is not impossible, hundreds pass every year. You just need to take the right steps to pass.

If you are an out-of-state dentist/dental student and do not take a prep course, your pass rate is like 10-15%. If you take the prep course, the pass rate is like 85-90%. Are they expensive? Yes, but so is missing one year of practice.

Take the next exam in October/November and get your prep on! Put 100% into the test because I think if you don't pass a third time, there is remediation coursework required. Not to stress you out but you may want to seek a residency position and then focus 100% when the time comes.

Good luck!

I did take the prep course (Gordy Course) and they failed me twice. I can accept making a mistake and failing. But when you do things to perfection and admire the work you did and they still fail you, thats when I have a problem. After speaking with the chief examiner and listening to the things he said, I know for a fact the test is a scam. Im not trying to sound arrogant but I know what good work is and I know I did a damn good job. It is what it is and I am just going to try joining in a residency late.

Becker Course Better. Better yet:If I had the opportunity to take the boards for a Fl license, by taking the ADEX in another state, I would. The exams may be the same, but Fl exam in FL is noted for rejecting patients at a very high rate. Take the exam outside of FL. use FloridaDentalLaw.com to prepare for law exam.

Stop wasting your time. We all know these boards are there to control supply and protective measures against competition. Sad. Corruption. Try maybe networking who works with the state Board.
