Received my MCAT score yesterday. 10/8/11. Really upset with verbal and PS.

Just got my primary verified today. I'm an Illinois resident and at this point I don't know whether I should retake the MCAT in 2 weeks with the hopes of breaking 10s in every section or go ahead and try my luck with Illinois and other low-tier MD schools. My AAMC FL average was 30.8

Rest of my profile is decent. 3.85 and average volunteering/shadowing experience. The 8 in Verbal is giving me nightmares. Any input would be appreciated.

Far from damning stats. That 3.85 will carry you far and a 29 mcat isn't stellar but it's sufficient for md schools. Maybe not Harvard or Hopkins but you're having nightmares over nothing. Relax.

If you haven't been MCAT-prepping for the last 12 weeks, and with a practice test average of 30.8, what makes you think a retake would be hugely different from the 29 you just got? Especially when you consider when your new scores would come out, and the impact of schools potentially 'waiting' for them before fully considering your application.

Decide to either:
  1. give it your best shot NOW, or
  2. wait a year and give the MCAT your best sustained efforts and apply next year.
Trying to split the difference and apply now with a 'future' MCAT score that may or may not help you doesn't make sense.

You'd be a shoo in for any DO school if you want to go that route.

8 in verbal is not gonna kill your app don't worry

You're not dead in the water, particularly at some Illinois schools. That said, it's definitely not a guarantee at this point. Be prepared for a plan B, reapp type situation

Your score is consistent with your AAMC average, so I don't see the problem.

Did you think "average" meant "at or higher"?

Received my MCAT score yesterday. [29]. My AAMC FL average was 30.8

If you were to go from a 29 to a 31, it wouldn't be an impressive change. My MCAT was 5pts lower than my AAMC FL average, be glad yours was more predictive 😉

But really, with your GPA, you'll be able to get into an MD school somewhere. And easily get into a DO school. Relax 🙂
