I just read on the AAMC website a list of questions to ask when investigating med schools. One question was whether or not a school offers notetaking services. This is a strange concept to me. It suggests that someone takes notes and distributes them. But shouldn't I be taking my own notes? How exactly do these services function? Is this service really important? Please clarify...

can you post the link?

In some cases there are groups of students that take notes. A student or two are assigned a lecture and then shares the notes with everyone. The next couple are in charge of the next lecture and so on. This way, thechnically, one does not need to go to every lecture.

if you're someone who'll go to class and take you own notes than you don't have to worry.

some schools have a student run service that pays students to transcribe their notes for a certain class (it gets verified with someone else's notes for accuracy). then folks in the class pay to have the notes delivered to their mailboxes at school. some people then just don't go to class and study from their notes. it's a big plus at schools where tests come from lectures and you don't go to class.

other schools may tape their lectures or give handouts of the lectures from profs or whatever. it's nice to know what to expect when you're looking at a school, but it shouldn't factor into your decision of where to go. we didn't have a service at my school, and people who didn't go to class (but studied from texts) still did great on tests.

Yeah, but I know a lot of people who went to class diligently in undergrad, and started out the year with every intention of being a 100% classgoer. But here in med school they've decided their time is better spent studying on their own or with a group outside of class. As for myself, I skipped 90% of my classes in undergrad, but I only skip about 60% in med school, so I've kind of gone the other direction.

I still subscribe to the note service, though, because I like to listen to the lecture without taking notes.

samoa, good points. i def would have subscribed to a service if we had one (went to 50% of classes, but i was A-OK w/o the service).
