I just recently got news that three of our abstracts were accepted for a poster presentation in early January. My question is: should I relay this information to programs that rejected me already, that I haven't heard from yet, or both?

I would not do this. A relatively minor detail that is more likely to make you appear desperate than help you. Most programs do not base their invitations to interview on little stuff like a few abstracts. I would think the interview itself would be an excellent time to mention it, especially if research comes up. But I'm still an applicant myself so take this with a grain of salt.

Also, my theory on programs that have already rejected me is that I would be at a severe disadvantage compared to the rest of their interviewees if I somehow persuaded them to reconsider and offer me an IV. I manage to quickly convince myself that I'm too good for Penn, for example.

A single poster presentation isn't really worth harassing programs over-- although the ones who already rejected you are pretty safe, because it's not like they can reject you again.

If you cured cancer, I'd tell them. If you're making a shiny poster, I'd let it slide.

I'd agree with this. If you really want to, I guess you could send an update email to the programs you haven't heard from, but I wouldn't expect much to come of it. I definitely wouldn't contact the programs that have rejected you - that's a dead end at this point.

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll just go ahead and send a brief update to programs I haven't heard from yet explaining that our abstracts were accepted for a poster presentation. I think it won't hurt, and at the very least may land me an interview.

Good luck,

Let us all how it goes.

Hey- I'm in the same situation right now, except it's just one abstract that's been accepted for a poster presentation. Should I send an email update to all the programs I've interviewed at? Do I send the email to the PD or the PC? And should I attach the abstract?
Or is this such a minor thing I shouldn't bother programs about it?

Thanks!🙂
