I just received an interview invite from Nova today. I was REALLY excited at first but now Im started to get worried. Is Nova a good school? and is Ft. Lauderdale safe? Im from Canada and my family was really excited, yet worried, when I shared the news.

I really want to start Optometry school in Fall 2009, but I dont know that much about the areas in the States. I want to be somewhere I am happy and safe for the next four years.

Any feedback and experiences from people that attend or have attended Optometry school there would be appreciated!

Congrats on the Nova interview!!! Although I'm not familiar with Nova's program, I did get a chance to learn from Dr. Sowka's lecture on Optometric Malpractice at the AAO Conference in Anaheim last month. Dr. Sowka is currently the Chief of the Advanced Care Center and Director of Glaucoma Service at Nova. In addition, he's one of the editors of Review of Optometry, so maybe you can read some of his articles and then talk about them during your interview..if they ask you why you chose Nova. I actually enjoyed his Q&A presentation regarding malpractice in optometry.

I've been pretty happy with NOVA's optometry school overall so far. There's definitely enough resources here for you to succeed. I'd say only two professors this semester stand out to me as great teachers though. I believe our clinics are our strong point as we have great faculty and a diverse patient population with a lot of disease.

As for the Ft. Lauderdale area, there's plenty to do and the weather is great. However, a majority of South Floridians strike me as rude and egotistical. Nobody smiles, holds doors, says please, thankyou, etc. and they can't drive for $hit. Most of the Nova students are nice though, so it's best just to stick around them.
