I have an interview at NOVA soon and I was wondering if anybody knew anything about their interview? Do they ask any weird questions? or if anyone just had any advice? thanks!!

hi ivru,

the interview isn't bad at all. some of my interviews for undergrad scholarships were more intense.... let's see. well, i had two faculty members who interviewed me at the same time. it was an open interview (they had my file open). they also had a list of questions they chose from. thus, the type of questions you'll get are random. just be sure you know why you want to become an optometrist. they didn't really ask my about any of my extracurriculars. they asked a lot of hypothetical questions such as "if a patient didn't follow my recommendations, would you still treat her?". i had my interview in the afternoon. prior to it, the students had lunch with the dean and went on a tour with the current opt. students. if your interview is in the morning, you might be able to sit-in during a class (the people who interviewed in the morning did that). okay, let's see what else.... if you took the oat for the first time in october, they said that the admissions committee will meet in 2 weeks and then i will know if i got in or not a week after (as soon as they got my scores). does that make sense? you might want to think about questions to ask the dean (we had dean reich..but you might get another dean cause i think dean reich is in dallas this week). a girl had asked dean reich about the passing rate on the board for first time students: he admitted that it wasn't good. nova is considering having a 5 year program for students who might benefit from a lighter course load (don't know if they pick you or if you get to pick). also, a current opt student said they there's tutoring available and if the demand for tutoring is high for a certain class, the school will pay for it. personally, the low passing rate on the boards reflects more on the student body rather than the faculty (people, please do not reply, trying to convince me otherwise--this is just my opinion). if you have good study skills and you're a dedicated student, you won't have any problems. the students who do well in their classes at nova do well on the boads.

i don't know if i answered your questions. sorry that i kinda rambled on.... oh, one more advise: stay at best western. they'll pick you up from the airport and they'll also take you to your interview as well as pick you back up to take you to the airport. this will save you over $50! the hotel made the experience stress-free. you can get a microwave and refrigerator for $5/day. my boyfriend packed me dinner and breakfast so i didn't have to spend $8+ for each meal (room service starts at $8 min and to get something to eat outside the hotel, you'll have to get a taxi).

let me know if you want to know anything else. good luck!

ivru, i just remembered another thing. some of the people who interviewed in the morning weren't feeling too good about the interview. they felt the faculty members were looking for you to say specific answers. i kinda felt that way but if they seem pushy (ask you to elaborate), just be calm and talk with confidence. they might not agree with your answer but if you back your answer up logically, they won't try to get "their answer" out if you. hope that helps. also, many of the students who interviewed at nova on the same day i did also had interviews at chicago. from what they said, they interview is not as laid-back as ico. thus, if you're expecting it to be like ico's, you should practice cause they will throw about 18 questions at you. but don't worry--just be confident (but not arrogant) and talk from your heart. 🙂
