Does anyone recommend NOVA pharmacy school? How is teaching/reputation? How do you rank it? There are students attending there, what is your experiences. Any negative, or positive things? Would you recommend it to a friend, regardless of the tuition dollars.

My friend went there and she hated the place. I never asked for specifics. My wife used to work there for a different department, so I would come visit on my off days. I thought the campus was very nice and it's in a safe area. I don't know if you're from the area, but it's very close to Fort Lauderdale (maybe 10 minute drive to downtown), and about 20-30 minutes from Miami. You'll have plenty to do on your off time.

I know you said tuition doesn't matter, but they charge an arm and a leg.

I'm currently in my second year at NSU. I haven't really had any problems up until now. There are a lot of good professors, and obviously there is also a few bad ones. First year for me wasn't too bad, but 2nd year is totally different. I guess it also has to do with the fact that I way more involved and doing research while taking all those classes, but I enjoy the challenge 🙂 Like the post above me said, the campus is pretty nice, and you have a lot of things to do whenever you have a bit of free time. Reputation wise, the best one in Florida is UF (even though a few of my UF friends hate the new curriculum lol). If you plan to work in Florida (especially South Florida) after you graduate, NSU is a great choice. Thats was my plan, so for me it was a no brainer 😀

Hi NeijixRockS,
will you be able to work outside of Florida if you decided to or if I decided to return to my home state?

what do you mean they charge an arm and leg? What other fees associated with the tuition? I know they charge student service fee, health insurance (waived if you have comparable), Health Professions Division General Access Fee: $145.

Is there other fees I am not aware of?
Thank you

They charge >$10,000/year more than UF: http://www.aacp.org/resources/research/institutionalresearch/Documents/Table 8_1617.pdf
Although I can't help but laugh when I see Nova is actually cheaper than PBA and the new (joke of a) school in Miami, Larkin.

That's going to be an increase of $40k compared to UF, which is regarded as a much better school. A hard pill to swallow if you are financing your education.

That, and living in SoFl is going to cost you at least 2x more than living in Gainesville, FL. I never had to hustle for rotations, but I know Nova pharmacy students had to juggle last minute changes during the P3/P4 rotation year.

Larkin is just a money-grab, expensive "not for profit" college associate with a for-profit hospital. They just opened up in the most saturated area in the state, an area which already had multiple pharmacy schools. The school is "pre-candidate" which means it isn't accredited and there is no guarantee they ever will be. I wouldn't do it.

Also, consider the quality of student they are admitting. From their website..

Admissions Requirements
  • Completion of prerequisite coursework with a preferred 2.7 overall GPA on a 4.0 scale
  • Preferred PCAT score of 50th percentile composite

Really scraping the bottom of the barrel here. 2.7 GPA PREFERRED. As if to say they will gladly take someone lower, but that sweet 2.7 will really make you stand out. I'd like to point out that I don't see a minimum GPA requirement anywhere..

On pharmcas 2.7 is listed as the minimum GPA for Larkin. I was also reading other forums where students were waitlisted bc of their gpas.. have you attended an interview there? what was it like if you did? I did not realize that it was still in pre-C. def a risk. I also read on their website that the dean founded other COP including Lecom.

I did not attend Larkin, but I have spoken with faculty when they were searching for rotation sites.

I can tell you that I have not been impressed with the students I saw from LECOM, so I wouldn't expect much from any program founded by the same person.

Thanks for your input! So are you working as a pharmacist; what COP did you attend? And did you like it?

I went to school out of state, and in fact no longer work in Florida. However, I would say that UF had the best reputation hands down. I knew several pharmacists that attended Nova who I had a lot of respect for as well, so they must be doing something right.

I wish i could attend UF but i have to stay in south fl so i have to choose between the three. would you know anything about PBA?

I am in FL. Pharmacist. Unemployed. I know there is no way that I can change a prepharmer mind. My advice is, do not go to pharmacy school, ever. However, if you decide that you want to get in hell/debt/despair. Go to the cheapest pharmacy school you can, I think A&M is cheaper than the rest. Also, go to a school that is relatively in a rural area. Here in SF it is beyond belief to get a job. I have applied for over two months and have not heard anything. Always have a backup plan so you can pay those student loans and get out fast when things get worse. NEVER drink the pharmacy school kool-aid. It tastes good but it is really bad for the stomach and your finances. School will not help you land a job. They will not publish a list of places where you can apply etc. Job fairs in school, many times are filled with already graduated students holding Rph status trying to get a job from those recruiters. It is a mess.

Also, mock apply for a pharmacist position right now. Bs your way through at CVS, walgreens, etc. See it for yourself how many job interviews you will get.

Not a fan of PBA due to the religious affiliation. I only met a few students from there and they seemed average, hard to determine the quality of the school. However, I am one of the largest fans of the city of West Palm Beach that you will ever find.. so if nothing else, I think it's a great place to spend 4 years. It's a real shame that Florida doesn't have a solid state Pharmacy school in SoFl considering it is the most populated area of the state.

Hmmm.. man, that is rough. I moved to South Florida in 2013 from out of state and got a clinical job, no residency, just with intern experience. Maybe things are just even worse now?

Can't tell you as I know school people are lurkers here and I am still in contact with them. Maybe one day they will show the plug they promised to all of us and use it to get us hooked. A family member went to NOVA. I know all the ins/outs. Pharmacy school kool-aid is super strong there too. They are a good school for sure, but pricey. Family member owes in student loans as much as I do. Around 230,000. Family member has another career that pays well. So Family member is doing better. No pharmcy gigs for the family member either, yet.

Congrats man for getting that job. yeah it is rough. Also, it seems like luck is also a big factor. One girl without residence got a job right out of school in one nice hospital here in SF, she wasn't rho chi or anything. She applied at the right time. Interviewed in 3 days. Started two weeks later. She is super happy right now.
