Alright here is the deal, Nova is one of my top choices.... for a multitude of reasons (including Dr. Lippman 🙂 and the fact that it is in Florida 😉). However, during my interview/tour 2 things came up that I am wondering about.
First, the chair issue. Dr. Lippman was honest enough to say that yeah there is a chair problem, but the school is working on it by sending students to other clinics (which I heard you can get more done there anyway). So how is the chair problem from your experiences?
Second, the laptop.... is it really necessary to buy a brand new laptop. The reason I ask is because I got a amazing laptop about a year ago so that I would be set for years to come. Will this one do?
Any other pros and cons.
Thanks ahead of time.

You should do a search. This topic has been discussed annually during the application cycle.

I did do a search, but I want any updates on the chair situation and the clinic in Miami.
Also there is nothing on the laptop requirements for Nova.

I goto Nova, never heard of this laptop thing, however the library loans out laptops should it be an issue of software etc.

i just graduated from nova in may so my info may be a little outdated:

1- they're attempting to fix the chair situation by having more external rotations (seem to work pretty nicely) and from what i understand they're gonna start opening the clinic on wednesday nights from 5-8. so it's definitely a work in progress

2- doesnt matter what laptop you have, your going to have to buy theirs. why? dunno probably because dell is gonna donate a nice chunk of change to the school in return for being able to "sell" you an expensive ***** laptop with all the bells/whistles for over $2K. They'll tell you some BS that they need you to be able to run vital source and axium on their, but any $500 laptop with windows will work; yet you still gotta get theirs 🙂 nice monopoly

This is one big thing I was worried about, so it is good to know that they are determined to solve this issue. This reassures me in how high I have Nova ranked on my list. Thanks.

2k for a dell..... great 🙄 (I had some not-so-good experiences with dells).
If I get accepted to Nova, could I go and get a HP or Sony with the same specs (and price tag)?
By the way, what model is the dell you guys had to get?

they sold us a dell latitude D820 (4 yrs ago). i think now the new students are getting a tablet dell (with the touchscreen). you have no option, you have to get theirs; it's built into the tuition. i didnt have any problems with the dell, and the nice thing is that if it misses it up they take it and give you a loner while yours is being fixed

Do you think Nova did a good job in preparing you in the clinical aspect? Also how did part 2 of the boards go for your class (and other classes)?

I guess I shouldn't expect problems with a $2000 computer. Also the support system sounds like it would be nice.

i really feel like you get what you put into it; i feel like their requirements are kinda crappy (only 8 crowns??) but i did around 13... however, i'm now doing a AEGD to better prepare me. i'm learning stuff that is not taught at most dental schools (ie, i placed my first two implants last week). the problem is that in dental school your soo worried about meeting requirements and graduating on time that you dont take the time to truly learn. now that i'm in residency there are no requirments and no stress. i try to just learn as much as i can and do as much as i can while i still have somebody to bail me out if i need it.

about part 2, i didnt hear of anybody having problems passing it (think its a pretty easy test to pass), however i dont think that if somebody failed they would be announcing it everywhere.

Hey omaralt,
How is the sim lab at nova? How many stations are there? How much time did you spend using them? Did they offer you good experience before jumping into clinic?

Are you doing a AEGD through a HPSP?

I'm a current D2 at nova. We're in sim lab for the first 2 years and you have an assigned seat in there (over 130 seats, I guess). In first year, you're there Mon and Wed afternoons for dental anatomy, operative, and occlusion. In second year, you're there 2.5 days out of the week for endo, fixed and removable prosths classes.

I have the dell tablet that was mentioned above, and it is basically a $3000 paperweight. We had so many problems that the D1 class got HP laptops this year... too bad we're still stuck with ours. You can really use any laptop at school, but you're still forced to buy theirs.

Hey, thanks for the response. That's awesome that you guys get to jump in on the clinical aspect from the 1st year.
Yeah, earlier I was mentioning how I've had problems with dells in past as well. So I wasn't too excited about the prospects of dishing out a couple grand on one.
Overall how do you like the school?
