hey guys, i got into both schools but i'm having a difficult time deciding between these two schools. if you guys know anything about their programs or have the inside scoop, can you please let me know. i'm really feeling the pressure of having to make a deposit within a few days of being accepted. Thanks.

Interviewed: Shenandoah, USC, Nova, U of Minnesota, Wingate, and Midwestern

Accepted: Nova, Wingate, Shenandoah

I was also accepted to Shenandoah and Nova and I chose Shenandoah. My fiance lives there so that played a huge factor. But I loved the school, the area, super small class size. I thought Nova seemed a little less "quaint". I had a good impression of them as well but for me, Virginia was more appealing than Ft. Lauderdale/Dade area. I think both programs are very good. Cost of living is more in Ft. Lauderdale.
Maybe consider what type of environment you want to live in. If you like bigger cities, a lot of places to shop, the beach... you'll like Nova. I've lived in Florida my whole life and was ready for a change! Good luck making your decision!

I would chose NOVA! Shenandoah is in the middle of freakin nowhere. I had an interview there last year. Unless if you like that, go to NOVA the sun is always shining, and the beach is nearby, its beautiful! Miami is only an hour away, and if your worried about hurricanes, no biggie just evacuate you will be fine. Good luck deciding.

I would choose NOVA...The campus is beautiful..& great weather. i really like the school when i went there for interview..the problem is the cost of tuition and renting apartment.. 🙂

is the tuition really THAT high?? it's pretty standard, give or take a couple of thousand a year. I think Shenandoah is 22K compared to 23K at nova. SC is a little over 30K. Midwestern is around the same range as Shen and nova. is there something i'm overlooking?

When my group had our little financial meeting Crystal told us that current students are paying around $38K/year (tuition + fees).

It's 38K/year for housing+books+transportation+tuitions+fees

It's 18K/year for a FL resident (tuitions only).

I thought Nova didn't have housing options.

I can't speak for Nova's program, but I'm happy at Shenandoah. Sure, the city is 70 miles west of DC, away from clubs and Starbucks (though we are getting one, and our local chain Daily Grind is pretty good actually 😉) and abundance of shopping, but it's all about priorities. The environment here is perfect for studying, and really, if you need to get away, there are many things to do within a 1.5 hour drive (DC, shopping in Northern VA, Skyline Drive, hiking, white water rafting, tons of museums and history and civil war battlefields).

I moved here from FL, and I embraced returning to a place that had 4 seasons. Summer Major and Summer Minor get old after a while. 😉

While the cost of living is increasing in Winchester due to people in Northern Virginia and DC moving out here, it's nothing like the cost of living in the Ft. Lauderdale/West Palm Beach area. That's something to consider.

If you have any specific questions, I'll be happy to answer them.

Oh, and MayaRx...

I beg to differ. In rains almost every day in FL in the summer time, whether it's for an hour or for half the day.

Riiight. It's not as easy as you're making it out to be. I lived an hour and a half from Orlando, and during Hurricane Charley, people from Tampa evacuated to Orlando because the hurricane was projected to hit Tampa/St. Pete dead on. A few hours before this projected landfall, it turned inland and hit Port Charlotte, crossing the state over Polk County and then Orlando -- the very place to which people evacuated. Not only were people scrambling to leave Orlando when they heard the hurricane was approaching their safe haven, but the normally 1.5 hour drive from Orlando to Tampa now turned into an EIGHT hour drive. It's not as easy as simply "evacuating."

Information about cost of living

I do not know if 70 miles outside of D.C. makes a difference in cost of living.
But I am from West Palm Beach area and the cost of living in D.C. and West Palm Beach IS EXACTLY THE SAME. NO DIFFERENCE.

That added, I think that Nova has been around longer than Shenandoah though. So I would personally go to Nova, but again this is just me. Visit the schools yourself. I am familiar with D.C. as well, but not Shenandoah. But Nova's pass rate on the Naplex has been consistenly close to 100% for a very long time. So I would consider this. And there are lots and lots of hospitals in both West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale to do your rotations. One of my pharmacist friends, who is a walgreens manager in North Palm Beach, FL works with the West palm beach campus of Nova and Palm Beach Atlantic and brings students into his store to do their rotations. He will tell you that in Florida, the ranking of the schools in terms of quality is:
UF > Nova > Palm Beach Atlantic > FAMU
