NOVA vs TUFTS

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Since they are both private where would you want to go? Boston or Miami?
Is the balmy Miami weather going to make you lazy?
Is the academic environment in Boston going to motivate you to study harder?
Is the cold winter in Boston going to make you feel miserable?

Where do you want to settle down and practice? Miami or Boston?
A local school to the region that you want to practice will be the most convenient to prepare for licensure for that region.

TUFTS. gotta look past the palm trees. i lived 20 minutes from NOVA and didn't even apply.

jb!🙂

tufts, i think.

Tufts. Don't give it a second thought.

If you want an indication of how good the two schools are, Tufts is an all-around university that excels in many disciplines. Nova isn't recognized in ANY field.

boston is a cool city. Only negative is driving in the city.

You're going to be a dentist either way.. it's not like deciding between tufts and bu which are both in boston. i personally think that geography has a lot of do with my decision personally... i think things like family, environment, weather have a lot to do with it. i live in boston, and i actually like the change in seasons, but having lived before with miami weather, it's also hard to turn down the warm weather. i really think it comes down to where you want to be. Both are good schools.

It would be intelligent to pick the school that will offer the best education...from my understanding, NOVA has quite a few problems with chairs, patients and unhappy students...if true, those factors don't add up to a great education...

I am originally from a city one hour from NOVA, and I did two years of schooling in Boston.

Living in both Miami (for 18 years!) and Boston (2 years), I would have to say Tufts. Tufts is a more respected university, while Nova does not have much of an undergrad. Also, there have been some rumors about problems and the faculty kicking people out in the Nova dental school.

For tufts versus BU that is hard. Then pick the one that is cheaper. Both are very expensive!!

To be fair to NOVA, they are a fairly new school so they are bound to be going through its growing pains. It doesn't have much of a reputation because it is new. In the end the degree that you get from NOVA is as valid as the one from Tufts. I'm sure you will find NOVA grads that can run circles around Tufts grads.
Don't decide based on purely reputation. Where will you be comfortable the most? If you like Florida stay there. If you feel that Tufts reputation and program will facilitate whatever career goal you are trying achieve better than NOVA then go there.

ughh im trying to decide between those two also... im from miami so its hard 😛, have u made a decision??

Same could be said for Tufts. Usually it's the slackers or unmotivated who have a hard time finding chairs or patients in the clinic.

Interesting statement. The Nova students, in particular, said if you stay on top of it, there really isn't a problem.

👍 FL resident also, now up at tufts. LOVE IT! this is the last 4 years i get to try something different, before settling down for the next 40 years. boston > ft. laudy IMO. i picked up a new hobby and now i go snowboarding/skiing every weekend. its no longer a once every 2 year trip to the mountains like when i lived in FL.

someone said driving sucks...it does. but who drives in big cities? just take the subway. no car insurance, no tune ups/repairs, no gas, just the $1.50 fee to ride the subway.

Personally, and I'm being honest here, I don't think I could put up with Boston accents for four years straight. I'd go crazy.

I was accepted at Nova and Tufts... the Nova campus was a bit too spread-out for me. And the weather was ridiculously hot. I think I'd rather be a bit chilled during the winter, than sweat like crazy every time I went outside. Also, they have hurricane-days, I hear.

Anyways, Tufts is tried and true. Though, I must say, the students were about equally happy at both schools.

Thank goodness the public transportation is so awesome compared to other places I've lived (Honolulu, Los Angeles, Riverside)

Dude, Dropkick Murphys come from Boston- deal breaker for me........

boston accents ARE annoying no doubt. but honestly, i've only heard a few of them while being up here. its not like everyone sports that sound, LOL. there are lots of people not from the area that have moved here for either school or work so its not as prominent has i thought it would be.

the flip side to the question is.....could you put up with being spoken to in spanish the next 4 years? and it doesn't matter what race you are...it will happen many times a week if you go out and about.

What do you guys think?

I do not mean to come off as flippant but the only way these posts can be answered is with a series of questions. As a future person of science perhaps we should consider the variables (many that I do not know).

Constant: They are both dental schools

Variable: Your preferences, you current location, your family's location, the curriculum, tuition, living expenses, your idea of a good time, your intuition; to name a few.

I do not mean to suggest you cannot compare schools but a more detailed history of your personal circumstances along with specific questions is in order.

Toyota or Honda?

What do you think?

You get the idea.

Kindest,

GoBlueJays - do you know if Nova offers any scholarships?

I am no authority on financial aid. In fact I am clueless. I pulled the following for the NSU-CDM website

"Applicants from low to middle income families are encouraged to apply for the limited number of need-based, college specific scholarships and loans"

I wish I could provide more.

After looking at your profile I see you're from Texas, but at first, I laughed seeing as how you're a Yankee fan.😀

I don't believe there are many, if any, if I'm recalling correctly from my interview.

I'm from south FL (Naples), and I've been deciding whether I should even bother applying to the super expensive schools like Tufts, NYU, BU, etc...my granddad lives in Boston and I absolutely LOVE the city and would much prefer living in a big city over Ft. Laudy (or Gville, ughhhh) any day...but how did you justify living so far away from family? And the huge factor of the cost of living difference? Those are the only things holding me back from applying to schools like that, so I am trying to get some other opinions.

too mnay tropical cyclone pass through Florida.....

yes for TUFTS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Id also say Tufts. I interviewed there and they definitely have a very strong program with lots of clinical exposure and it seems that you have a good shot at specializing if you get the grades.

So Tufts wins by a handful?

Does Nova have a GPA filter for out-of-state applicants? I noticed that Florida students with a way lower GPA than me getting interviews. I guess this is a warning for those of you who are out-of-state applicants. You are just handing them free money.

sorry for the late reply...i didn't see you had asked a question.
ft. lauderdale isn't that cheap. sure you might get a bigger place for your money but if you live by yourself, you can expect to pay close to or more than $1k easy. as for me and my family, i never had a problem with moving out. i went out of state for a few years of undergrad. during the summer when i was in middle and HS, my mom sent me to places that weren't in my hometown for extended periods of time. if you aren't used to being on your own then living in a big city might be a shock. all you really need to do is know how to fill out your financial aid, cook, clean, wash your clothes, pay bills on time and that is about it. but you said you had relatives up in boston so at least you know someone. i'd have to say not having a car was the biggest shock. you know how it is in FL! get ready to walk or wait for a subway here. i haven't drivin a car since i moved here and only ride in one when i go to the mountains to ski.

So its Tufts Vs NOVA for me....err...!! 😕 Tough call..Both the schools equally impressed me during interview.

Although this thread makes me lean more towards Tufts, I am not totally convinced to eliminate NOVA out of game.

I really dont mind any extremities of weather at any place. Also, tuitions aren't that different. Leaving expenses can get a little heavy at Boston but then I heard its worth it.

Any more insights on the issue would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Well i go to Nova, the environment is chill, we are not cuthroat, but if you want to be a gunner go right ahead. Weather really isn't that hot. I am from SoCal where it is super dry heat, and the humidity wasn't that big a change. Lets put it this way, I actually go running in the middle of August.

I didn't interview at Tufts so i can't really comment on them.

If you have specific questions about Nova feel free to pm me

Thanks for Your insights, I really loved the laid-back student environment at the school. Also, students at Nova were less stressed out than those from Tufts.

However, I had to make a decision before friday and I decided to go with Tufts. Can't let go the excellence clinical programs at Tufts.
