Hey, I've been fortunate enough to be accepted to UDM, Nova, and UBC (Canada), and have an interview coming up at USC. Location is probably the most important factor for me, so I think I've eliminated UDM. So now I'm torn between Nova and UBC.

In terms of pros for UBC, it would be nice to be close to friends/family, it's relatively cheap at around $60k/year, however it also has PBL which I don't love.

On the other hand, I feel like this could be a once in a lifetime opportunity to live in Florida for a few years and totally change things up, which is drawing me to Nova. It's also about the same price as UBC. But I've also heard questionable things about Nova's clinic, and FL is probably the farthest I could get from home.

UBC has an $11,000 deposit due before I would hear back from USC so that kind of rules it out, although I'd love to live in LA.

Any thoughts from students who attend/interviewed at any of these schools? Or lived in any of these places? Any and all input greatly appreciated - thanks!

As a fellow Canadian, I say go to UBC.

If PBL is not your thing, you may want to rethink even going to the USC interview. UBC has a great program and it in a great part of Canada. Personally, I did not apply to Nova or UBC, but I'd definitely go with the latter.

well that 11k deposit is sure deep to swallow but whatever u decide, u will do fine.

I think UBC will give you an upper hand if you want to do your residency in Canada, as it will be easier to land a spot here. Vancouver is a great place to be, and you can always go to visit LA. I would choose based on your long term plans of medicine, not where you might want to live for a couple of years.

I'm not sure where I'd like to end up practising, but I was under the impression that entry into specialty programs was pretty equal opportunity for both canadian and US grads...anybody know about this?

I have no idea what the exact residency spots are, as I am only planning on applying in Canada myself. It depends on if they designate it am international school or not (which I am assuming they do, but don't quote me). If you wanted residency in BC, I know the majority of spots are still reserved for students who studied in Canada, so it might be worth finding out as much information as possible before you make your final decision.

I always thought specialty programs weren't as concerned about your province or state of residence as well just because not every province or state has every specialty but maybe that's just my assumption.
