Any place you live has its potentials for disasters. It's just a fact of life. We can't all go around being afraid that something bad is going to happen. If you lived your life like that, you wouldn't really be living at all.
I wouldn't discount living in a certain place unless the potential for disasters was exponentially higher than average.
Memphis (for example) is around the new Madrid fault line. When a major earthquake hits here, it's going to be a disaster. When will that happen? Of course no one knows. Do I worry about it? Occasionally. Did I let it keep me from attending school where I wanted to? Absolutely not.
