If you have to pick a position (IM) at either Cleveland Clinic or Mayo (then apply for cardiology fellowship) vs. a 7-year fast track with a guarannteed cardiology fellowship at Albert Einstein or Univ. Ill at Chicago, what would you do?

CCF for IM is crap. Their cards program doesn't even take their own residents.

When OSU med school was affiliated with CCF, none of the OSU students who did their 3rd/4th years at CCF stayed there for medicine.

Tough choices, the answer would be is would you rather have certainty now at a less than top 10 Cards place or expect to get lucky or plan on working hard to try and land a fellowship at mayo....
For me, location was a key point, so I didn't even consider a scenario such as this, however, I really wish that cardiology was a match right out of med school, this round of application and match is just killing me and I feel that I should go on xanax

Is this something new, because usually doctors have to first finish IM and then apply for Cardiology and hope they get in?

I would definitely go to Albert Einstein or UIC. Both are in decent locations.

The fast track was designed for physician scientists. Usually applicants are AMGs with either MS or PhD or significant research accomplishments. These are the folks who want to pursue a career as researcher and sub-specialist. Usually it is 6 or 7 years long, with a guaranteed fellowship of their choice if they matched with a program.

cleveland clinic has actually taken one resident most years into their cards program. from what I hear, they will probably take 1-3 internally from now on.
Don't listen to what people say online..you can find anyone who will say a place is great or a place is 'crap'. people I know who went to MGH didn't even rank their program for cards..take that for whatever its worth.
