I am confused about something. So I got the email that I matched to an advanced position but not a preliminary position today. I only applied to advanced programs given that I have already done an internship/preliminary year.

It shows that I am SOAP eligible for internship positions. How come the NRMP does not know that I had previously matched to a prelim position, and that I don't need one?

Also since I have a gap year, can I technically apply for another intern/prelim year?

I was just curious! I was really excited this morning but figured I'd ask!

That is funny because I am in the same situation, I already did my intern year as well, applied to categorical and advanced positions, but did NOT put in a supplement list.

My number 1 and 2 were both advanced positions, can I then assume I did not get those since I only got a "Congratulations you have matched" email.

Its odd since this is on their website:

1. Congratulations, you have matched!
This message will be displayed for any applicant who is "fully" matched, including

  • Applicants who listed and matched to a categorical program and applicants who listed and matched to preliminary and advanced programs.
  • Applicants who listed only advanced programs on their certified rank order lists and did not list any preliminary positions on a suppliemental rank order list.
  • Applicants who included only preliminary programs on their certified rank order lists.
The matching algorithm considers an applicant "matched" if he/she lists only one program type on his/her certified rank order list. Applicants who receive this message will not be eligible to participate in SOAP, nor will they have access to the List of Unfilled Programs.
2. Congratulations, you have matched to an advanced position but not a first year position!
This message will be displayed for any applicant who matched to an advanced position but did not match to a preliminary position listed on a supplemental rank order list. Applicants who receive this message and who are deemed eligible to enter graduate medical education on July 1 in the year of The Match will be eligible to participate in SOAP and will have access to the List of Unfilled Programs. Applicants will not have access to information about unfilled categorical or advanced positions.
3. Congratulations, you have matched to a one- year position!
This message will be displayed for any applicant who matched to a preliminary position but did not match to an advanced position listed on the primary rank order list. Applicants who receive this message and who are deemed eligible to enter graduate medical education on July 1 in the year of The Match will be eligible to participate in SOAP and will have access to the List of Unfilled Programs. Applicants will not have access to information about untilled categorical or preliminary positions.

I understand you're just curious, but really?..another intern year? el oh el. That would be hardcore. ha

Well for one I just wanted to post my question to make sure that after the excitement wore off, that I wasn't way off and I actually had to SOAP or something! And yes I don't really want to do another intern year, but what am I going to do for a year? Other than taking step 3, I am not sure what to do healthcare related. I have looked into one of those urgent care things but don't thikn I can do them in my state.

Hey, I just pm'ed you. I think based on this you probably got a categorical spot. I listed 2 programs that were categorical at the end of my list just in case, so I think that is why I got the message that I got maybe. If I had not listed those 2 programs, I think I would have gotten the "congrats, you have matched!"

Someone correct me if I'm wrong please

You are correct on all points.

1. DrAwsome has matched to an advanced position. Because he/she ranked a categorical position, SOAP assumes you wanted a PGY-1 year, so you get the message that you can apply via SOAP for PGY-1's.

2. MassiveAttack has matched to a Categorical spot. Had he/she matched to an Advanced spot, he/she would have gotten the same email DrAwsome did.

thank you for clarifying, guess I am onto rank 3 and onward ! neat that I can tell already I didn't get my first two haha

Thanks for clarifying this for us! 🙂

Well though u matched previously...u could have quit or been kicked out or u couldnt start the residency for wuteva reason. I think it is better for them to assume that u trying all over again than to assume that u utilized your prelim spot and then not offer u the chance to apply through SOAP
