So I have a weird question. I am applying for dermatology. I got the email that I matched today. At the bottom my ROL, I listed ranks that had me only matching to a prelim year and not to a categorical spot.

I heard from a resident just that the phrasing of the email that everyone got today at noon EST was important. Essentially he said that the computer knew the difference between a categorical and a prelim spot no matter where it was on your rank list.

Also I found out that that there are 11 derm spots in the SOAP. I guess what really want to know is if there is if there is any way to know from the email that I got today whether I got a derm spot or just a prelim.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My understanding is that when u match in one but not the other...the email will say you partially matched. Hopefully somebody with the experience will come and answer this

If it says you matched, then you are fully matched. If you matched only to a prelim position, it will say congrats, you matched to a one year position, if you matched to an advanced position, it would say congrats, you matched to an advanced position but not a preliminary position. So you should be good to good. Also if you are partially matched, then you should be SOAP eligible, and it will show you all the programs that you are eligible for.

So even if I put prelims on my primary rank list and not my supplemental... I should be good. I guess the essence of my question is whether I screwed myself out of being eligible for those 11 spots in the SOAP by putting prelims on my primary ROL.

If you had ranked nothing but preliminary programs, you would be considered fully matched. Since you ranked categorical/advanced + prelim programs in your main rank list, you will only be fully matched if you get both.

So someone who has a primary rank list of all prelims will be told they fully matched with a prelim, but you would not. Congrats.

EDIT: This is somewhere in the NRMP FAQ if you need confirmation.

So if you ranked both prelims and advanced position, you should be good. If you ranked ONLY prelims, then yes you would not be fully matched.

Did you rank both prelims and advanced spots? If so, you are fully matched.

Also, what does your SOAP eligibility say? If it says SOAP eligible, you are not fully matched. If SOAP uneligible, then you are fully matched and no need/possibility for you to obtain a derm spot as you already have one.

Yep, exactly.

You got your derm spot. I ranked categoricals & prelims on my primary ROL and got the email today - "you matched to a one year spot." Sad day.

Sorry to hear that, but not the end of the world. You can SOAP for a spot and hopefully will get one!

I AM SO SORRY!! There are 11 spots in the SOAP, and I am praying that you get one.

For those following I just found this on the NRMP FAQ (thanks to Drama):

http://www.nrmp.org/res_match/faq/us_seniors_faq.html#20

Click on "How will I know if I have matched to a program?"

"3. Congratulations, you have matched to a one year position!

This message will be displayed for any applicant who matched to a preliminary position but did not match to an advanced position listed on the primary rank order list. Applicants who receive this message and who are deemed eligible to enter graduate medical education on July 1 in the year of the match will have access to the List of Unfilled Programs and will be eligible to participate in the Match Week Supplemental Offer and Acceptance Program to obtain an advanced position. Applicants will not have access to information about untilled categorical or preliminary positions."
