Just trying to make sure I understand correctly-

When you enter the SOAP, you are only allowed to apply to 30 programs max the first day? And then 20 max the following day(s) if you're still unmatched? Or can you apply to more programs as long as you pay extra $$?

You understand correctly. You can only apply to 30 on day 1, then 20 each additional day. You cannot buy more applications. The "good news" is that these applications are included with your prior paid ERAS fees.

Of note, you must have applied to at least one program in the regular season to participate in SOAP.

Your 30 applications can go to any mix of program types. However, if you need both a prelim and an advanced spot, you still get only 30 total applications.

.

And just to be sure, you mean "applied" and not interviewed or ranked, right?

Correct. You pay your basic fees in ERAS when you actually apply to a program. Hence, you need to apply to one program to pay your initial fee, USMLE fees, etc. You do not need to be invited for an interview. I don't think it matters whether you actually rank any programs, or certify an empty list, or don't certify anything.

Wow, so with only 30 apps, you really have to choose wisely which programs to apply to. Not sure what the best strategy is, but do you all think applying to the least competitive fields Peds, FM, etc during the first round would be the best? Or just apply to the field you prefer go into that's more competitive.

But then you risk the chance of landing a less competitive spot on the first day OR you may not come out of the SOAP with an offer at all.

So it means you can not participate in SOAP if you take only token for ECFMG but not applied to any program.. help me coz i took token in September but i have not applied to any program but i want to participate in SOAP, can i ..?

But you might be able to apply to some program now. Doesn't matter which, choose any program. If so, then your fees will all be paid and you'll be good to go.

...unless by "didn't apply to any program" you mean that you didn't set up your ERAS account at all -- i.e. no letters, transcripts, etc. In that case, there's almost no way you could do so in time.
