In my tax forms, I listed 0 dependents.

However, over the past few months, my father lost his employment and I have been supporting my family of 4. Considering he will not be looking for new employment until well into next year (and has not a dollar to his name), I was wondering if I should list the number of dependents on my application to 3?

I would put the number of dependents on your application the same number as your tax form. Since this has not little relevance to admissions.

You should probably consult a CPA or other tax specialist instead of an online forum of pre-meds who know little, if anything, about taxes.

I didn't think it was a tax matter. A CPA would probably know less about the AMCAS~

If you are supporting yourself, I would put dependents: 1

On forms like this, you count yourself as 1 as long as someone else is not claiming you as a dependent.

I would personally not put your other family members down unless they are your children. But, that's just me. Legally, it might be okay.

But, last year, you should have put 1 as well unless your family was supporting you and claiming you as their dependent.

Straight from the AMCAS 2013 Instruction Manual: "Enter the number of people who are financially dependent on you. Do not include yourself."

The number of dependents should be the same on AMCAS as it is on your taxes. Legally, a dependent is someone for which you provide more than 50% financial support. If you put 0 dependents on your most recent tax form, you should also put 0 dependents on AMCAS. Whoever said you should put down 1 dependent for yourself is clueless.

Yeah, you are right. I was not aware of that for AMCAS. It is different for taxes, that's why I said that. My mistake.
