Would any of you guys dare to speculate on the number of MD/PhD spots a year?
So the total number of students that enter a fully funded (albeit not necessarily MSTP) MD/PhD program at all U.S. institutions?
How many might be women? URMs? International students?

Does anybody know if this data is actually published anywhere?

I of course have no idea, but that's never stopped me before. 😀

According to the AAMC, there are "over a hundred medical schools with MD/PhD programs." There are 125 med schools accredited by the LCME, so let's say 110 have active MD/PhD programs, and 100 guarantee full funding.

Skip Brass at UPenn claims they have "the biggest MD/PhD program in the universe." They let in about 20 per year. Some schools only admit 1 or 2. In my (albeit limited) experience, 6 per program might be a reasonable average. So that gives 600 funded spots per year. With 16,000 in each entering med school class, that 3.75% of MD students being MD/PhD. (Of course, not all will finish.)

I have no idea how many are women, but I'd guess it's a fair amount, based on who I saw at interviews... 40%, maybe? As for URM's, I suspect it's pretty low, a lot less than 10%. Didn't see many at interviews.
