can anyone tell me about being a Nurse's Aide. I am a freshamn in college and I am currently volunteering at Texas Children's Hospital in the Texas Medical Center.

What type of qualifications are needed to be a nurse's aide? Who should I contact about this inquiry?

Thank You
Kristen Burroughs

I am a nurse's aid at a mental institution. Typically, you need a six month long course, and CPR certification. However, I got my job with only the CPR certification because my hospital was at a point where they were desperate to hire people and since they thought I was going into medicine anyway, hired me for on-call casual work.

I can tell you how I did it. I lived in a large city at the time (1.5 million), that had several hospitals. I started looking for the job after I graduated from college, and found one listed on the hospitals web site. They said they "Recommend" at least 6 months of previous experience; however, I had none. I was hired anyway (in part because I had a college defree, and they were desperate), and I was trained by the hospital. I'd suggest checking into this route first, because if you are trained by the hospital (rather than in a CNA class), you get paid while you learn! That was a huge plus. Feel free to ask any other questions, and keep pursuing Pt care experience, you will not regret it!

Six months? Odd... I took mine in only a month of classes at a community college over the summer. Did you by any chance take the night classes? I've heard those drag on forever. My hospital requires BCLS as opposed to American Red Cross CPR, which I had in my class, so I was obliged to go through a second CPR course.

many hospitals train you themselves over the course of a week or two. You don't get the fancy CNA certificate, but you are a tech or a patiet care tech. I was an ER tech and I had 1 day of hospital policy stuff. Granted i was a paramedic student at the time, but that's beside the point. Look into several different hospitals and find out which one's train you themselves and quickly. i learned phlebotomy and such all on the job training.
Excellent experience!!

Bloody hell... and I went through a month and a week of this stuff just to find out it's possible to have it done in a WEEK?! And in any case, this hospital's policy is a two-week training period to orient new hires to the hospital in general and to nursing aide responsibilities specifically. So much in life that is redundant!
