I'm a combat medic in the US Army, and I'm trying to decide what to do when I get out. I love working in the medical field, but I have no experience on the civilian side of things, so I was wondering..what's the difference between what a nurse does, and what a PA does in terms of day-to-day work, scope of practice, pros/cons. I work under a PA, so my current scope of practice is "whatever she says I can do" 🙂

Also, I'm pretty sure I'd like to work in an ER setting (I've learned to love hustle and bustle lol)..would either path more easily lead there?

This kinda reminds me of the "potential" nursing student who showed up for advising and asked, "Now what is it nurses do?" Looks like you already know what a PA does. Although I've been a medic, trauma nurse, helicopter flight nurse, etc, I am now psych NP. I mostly sit in an office, the patients are bought in to me, we have a chat, and I prescribe or adjust their meds and maybe offer a little supportive therapy. My big mug of iced tea is always nearby and I have an hour off for lunch.🙂

If I had a background as combat medic, my decision would be a slam dunk - PA all the way! 🙂

Zenman, how does one become a Psych NP? Sounds like an interesting gig.
