Has anyone on here looked into this field or is currently a NSP? I'm obtaining my BS in Nutrition Science currently and applying for some PharmD programs soon and have been growing more interested in this route. What all can NSPs do? I've looked at the bsp but it didn't give me much information besides certification.

Thank you!

that is a very very very very limited career path. there are very few pharmacists that work full time as Nutrition Support pharmacists. Mostly they write the TPNs for the doctors. Most hopsitals have the dietitians do so but some have pharmacists do it. Also critical care pharmacists may also help write the TPNs for their patients. If that's what you want to do, I think you are better off being a dietitian.

Thanks for the info! I don't really have a strong desire for NSP, I just wanted to get some more info on it.

At our large health system the dietitians write the orders. I would say where I see the most RPhs in nutrition support is the actual compounding of the TPN's. We use an outside company to compound our TPN's and RPhs work there.

At our hospital, TPNs are done by either our clinical coordinator or director. It is a small portion of their jobs. None of the hospitals where I have been has there been a pharmacist who has only done TPNs.
