Northwestern offers two clinical PhD programs - One is housed in the Weinberg College of Arts & Sciences (Ranked #14), and the other is housed in the Feinberg School of Medicine (Ranked #37). I'm interested in both, but I feel like I am a better fit with the Feinberg program. I was wondering if anyone knew any more specifics about differences between the two programs? From my own digging around their respective websites I believe that the Weinberg program is much more research based, while the Feinberg program places a greater emphasis on clinical work and multidisciplinary mental health, which makes sense given that they're housed within a school of medicine. I appreciate your thoughts, thanks!

I applied to Feinberg, and that was one of the reasons why I chose one over the other. The main reason is which school had faculty in my area of interest.

Any idea on the level of competitiveness between the two programs? I would assume that Weinberg would be tougher to get into because of it's higher rank, but I know that rank isn't a foolproof measure of competitiveness for a program.

Feinberg (Chicago campus) is medical model psychatric foundations (used to be quite traditionally analytic in my day but that may have changed). Weinberg (Evanston campus) is traditional social science model research focus.

Yes - Feinberg is still pretty psychoanalytic. Evanston is your typical research focused clinical program. Feinberg also has very spotty funding, whereas Evanston again is your typical funded program. Finally, Feinberg is much more clinically focused than the Evanston program. And it is located in downtown Chicago!

I applied to Feinberg solely because there were no professors I would want to work with in CAS. Plus, my former dream was med school.. maybe I can live vicariously through the med students on campus. Or meet med students to marry in the future when they're rich.

My thoughts exactly

Anyone know anymore comparative admissions statistics between the two programs?

Hi All,
I interviewed at Feinberg last year and I would have to disagree about them being more psychoanalytic (I actually had one prof lecture me about how much he was anti-psychodynamics). They focus on evidence based practice and emphasize that in their orientation. Psychodynamics was definitely a large part of their founding but it is not a huge emphasis any longer. The thing that I liked about the program is that there are a lot of opportunities because they are housed in a medical school so if you are into neuropsychology or think you might be or if you want to get the sense of how it is to work in a research center or hospital type atmosphere, Feinberg is a great option. For example they literally had their own brain pathology lab in the neuropsych department. You are right about the funding situation Emily621 it is spotty for sure. Still, I was very impressed with the program.
