There was a question as to the exact facts about doing a 2 yr AEGD program and being able to practice at some point in the state of NY, take a look at what I wrote and please give your opinions and or facts on this issue , we would all appreciate it , Thank you- Bill--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

here is what it says according to the state law:

http://www.op.nysed.gov/dentlic.htm

If you completed a program of dental education in an unregistered and unaccredited foreign dental school, you must complete not less than two academic years of study satisfactory to the Department in a registered or accredited dental school program including such subjects as may be necessary for certification by such registered or accredited school that you have achieved the level of knowledge and clinical proficiency expected of a graduate of the school. It is a fact that the AEGD Program meets this standard of law. The state will not give you a direct answer because they don't want this pathway to be saturated with FTDs as there are so many people from other countries residing in the state of New York, This is there way of "controling" the issue. I spoke with the State board for dentistry and they were stand offish as well but read the law for yourself, That is why Rochester is the only program of its kind , other then Advanced Standing programs at the 4 universities in NY. If you have questions about acceptable programs, contact the New York State Board for Dentistry by e-mail at [email protected], by phone at 518-474-3817 ext. 550 or by fax at 518-473-6995.

In addition to the professional education requirement, every applicant for dental licensure or a limited permit must complete coursework or training in the identification and reporting of child abuse in accordance with Section 6507(3)(a) of the Education Law. You must submit a certificate of completion from an approved provider or file a certification of exemption before a New York State license or permit can be issued. See additional information and a list of approved providers for this training. This information can also be requested by calling 518-474-3817 ext. 570. You may be eligible for exemption from the training if you can document, to the satisfaction of the Department, that your practice does not involve professional contact with persons under the age of 18 and that you do not have contact with persons 18 or older with a handicapping condition who reside in a residential care school or facility.

You must also complete approved coursework or training appropriate to your practice regarding infection control and barrier precautions in accordance with Section 6505-b of the Education Law, including engineering and work practice controls, to prevent the transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis b virus (HBV) in the course of professional practice. Graduates from New York State dentistry programs after September 1, 1993 are credited with having completed this coursework as part of their dentistry program. All other applicants must submit an attestation of compliance with or exemption from the infection control coursework requirement (Form 1IC) within 90 days of your date of licensure. Form 1IC will be sent to you along with your license. See additional information and a list of approved providers of this training. This information can also be requested by calling 518-474-3817 ext. 570.

Accredited Dental Programs
For information about accredited dental programs in the United States or Canada, contact the American Dental Association, 211 E. Chicago Avenue, Chicago, IL 60611 by phone at 312-440-2500, by fax at 312-440-7494 or check their Web site at www.ada.org or contact the State Board for Dentistry (see Contact Information).

Now as per the University of Rochester statement , so you see how the program matches the states requirement, It reads :

UNIVERSITY OF ROCHESTER
EASTMAN DEPARTMENT OF DENTISTRY
DIVISION OF GENERAL DENTISTRY

Overview / Didactic Courses and Lectures / Clinical Activities/ Rotations / Graduate Degree Programs / Faculty Research Interest

I. OVERVIEW

The University of Rochester Eastman Department of Dentistry offers a one and two year advanced education in General Dentistry AEGD Program. These programs are approved by the Commission on Dental Accreditation and after completion the participants receive a certificate. For those who are enrolled in the two-year program and who have an interest to enter a career involving teaching or research, this program can be integrated with research training. The research program at the University of Rochester includes a Master of Science (major in dental science) and Master of Public Health. The Ph.D. program is in one of the basic biomedical sciences. Fellowships supported by the National Institute of Dental Research are available to those who plan a career primarily in research and teaching.

Enclosed is an application packet and information which describes training opportu¬nities at University of Rochester Eastman Dental Center. We look forward to receiving your application.

Hospitals can only consider applications from graduates of foreign dental schools that are eligible for New York State licensure. How I understand this , is they won't accept you to thier program if you are not eligible. Current policy requires that the candi¬date has a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree from an American Dental Association accredited dental school. Unfortunately, this is not possible for dentists trained outside of North America. However, you may apply to the International Dental Postgraduate Program in General Dentistry at Eastman Dental Center. This part is confusing to me and I would appreciate any input as to how to understand this. There is a $100.00 application fee to apply.

Ok so let us all give our thoughts to this, If anyone knows anything different please post your thoughts or facts , thank you -BILL

I think International graduated cant apply to 1 year AEGD like USA graduate and also we cant apply to Perio, Prostho etc etc. because of hospitals,,,,
But we can still apply for 2 years AEGD and after finishinfg take licence exam.
A lot of questions left, but...

This might answer some of your questions:

Do I become licensed to practice dentistry in the United States after Rochester 2 year AEGD program?
Licensure laws vary between states. However, in New York State, international students may be eligible to apply for licensure by completing the two-year General Dentistry program. New York State Education Department (NYSED) recognizes Eastman Dental Center's General Dentistry program as an equivalent to a U.S. degree. Education from your foreign dental school will be evaluated by NYSED and extra credit courses may be required. Also, a green card (permanent residency) is required. Students without a green card can get a limited license to work in an underserved population for 3 years. For more information regarding New York State licensing requirements, the website is http://www.op.nysed.gov/dentlimlic.htm . Students without a green card can get a limited permit to work as a dentist in an underserved population.

But the problem is : NY now requires even grads of American schools to do a PGY1 after dental school (starting '07, no need to take NERB), so that may affect how they look at Rochester AEGD program. I have checked their website but there is no clear answer. so this 2 year AEGD program is considered as a degree and would exempt from going to advanced standing program, how we are going to satisfy the above 1 year residency requirement. You need to do 1 more year residency (after this 2 year AEGD)?

Bill: my suggestion is if you get into other masters program ( like BU prostho ).. go for it instead of this Rochester program. Advantage with this.. 1)you will get masters in a speciality, 2)as this is 3 year program may be residency requirement can be waived( in this way you can save 3 years!). even if you have do a mandatory residency, still you can save 2 years.

Do This Rochester Prgram..if You Get In That Is (super Competitive)..do 2 Years There..then Do 1 Year Gpr, Which Is Manditory And Not Hard To Get In If You Do The Rochester Program..go Out And Make Cash..cash..cause You Wont Have Any Debt..good Luck

I Am Giving You All This Information Cause It Comes From Personal Experience. I Completed The One Year Aegd Program At Rochester And The Worked With The International Students In The 2 Year Program. Most Of Which Did The Nerbs And Now Are Working In Private Clinics And Some Are The Directors Of Aspen And Making
150 000 - 190 000 Already.
Now The Law Is Changing, Which Will Require Everyone To Do A Residency. So Now It Will Be 3 Years For International Students To Get A Licence. 2 Years In The Aegd And One Year In The Gpr Program. But Remember No Debt.
So Let Me Get This Straight..say You Went To Nyu (3 Year Program) Costs About 400 000 At The End, And Then You Have To Do 1 Year Gpr. So Thats 4 Years And At The End Of The Day You Will Work In Ny State. This Is A Huge Huge Difference Between Going To Rochester Or Nyu...rochester Would Be A Gold Mine For Internation Students.
Trust Me They Interveiw So Many Students And Only Accept 8 - 10 A Year. This Program Has Been Around Since In 1977, And Many Students Have Done Specialities And Are Working In Many States..eg. Illinois, Washington, New York, Michigan....

Good Luck

Thank You, Lucus.
No doubt if Rochester accept me I am going there. I liked this Eastman Dental Center.

well It is a hard decision to make , but I will go to BU because we have to stick to the rules and that is get in where you get accepted. But as you all know me I am fervently committed to do my part for dentistry on three fronts and that is Teach, Help the poor and less privileged, and get into the public arena and better the system that affects the FTD community. So that being said , I would choose Rochester simply because I would be able to do the AEGD and a masters in public health. Interesting enough I have three very close friends two are in Prosth masters and on is done and practicing. It would be great to be in the world of prosth with them but my heart is telling me to stay the course so I rely on God to show me the way and the more I talk about this I seem to always wind up back where started , so If Rochester will have me I am theirs. Thank you all for weighing in on this post I do appreciate it.

Is there any other hospital or college that has a program like eastman in rochester. That can admit foreign trained grads.thanks
