Hi all,

Just received my Step 1 score back today and I got a decent 225, which is above the anesthesia average, but not quite the 230 I was hoping for. I wanted to know if any of you know approximate cutoffs for the bigger name NYC programs - Columbia, Cornell, NYU, and Sinai. I figure they're pretty popular and can afford to set a high cutoff, and while I think I have a good application, I'm hoping my score won't prevent me from even getting the interview.

I know there are quite a few other NYC programs that I would be happy at, but it would definitely be nice to be competitive at one of those four! Thanks!!

I'd be really surprised if someone had an answer for you. But let me ask you something real quick: say someone told you the PD of sinai was their dad and he said the cutoff this year was 226. Would that stop you from applying? Are you going to use someone's calculated average determine where YOU want to do YOUR residency? I'd suggest applying to where you want to go and seeing what happens. Apply broadly and, if the interviews start pouring in, be sure to cancel promptly to open up spots for others. good luck, man.

a) the decision to apply or not is over a year away
b) the best way to find out if you're competitive is to fork over the $8-25 in ERAS to apply to the school, not post on a message board

No, it would not stop me from applying, but I'm just asking if anyone - students at those schools, people who interviewed, or current residents, perhaps - knows. The PD at my home program told students what the cutoff is, and like someone else mentioned, Northwestern has theirs on their website. Obviously, some programs may not reveal those numbers.

Yes, it's still a year away, but it's nice to know how realistic certain options are.

I did well below average on step 1 and interviewed at columbia, cornell and nyu but not at sinai this past year. I did do a lot better on step 2 and think that you'll be competitive with just your score. I wouldn't sweat things now and try to do well during your third year.
