Initially I planned on applying to mostly Univeristy programs in a range of geographic locations, but as a result of family responsibilities I have to stay in NY for residency. I am fortunate in that there are ALOT of programs in NY, but I do not know how to rate/rank many of them. of course I know about the Univeristy programs, but I do not know about the reputation of many of the Community programs. I'm sure there are plenty of ppl who are appyling to them as well and was wondering if I could get any input on some of these programs. I do not want to go on 30 interviews but I am not sure which interviews to keep and which to cancel 😕😕😕😕

Ex. lenox hill, ny downtown, maimonades, brooklyn hospital center, nassau, ny methodist, lutheran, etc....

any input would be greatly appreciated!!!

We were told by faculty members to avoid Albany and UMDNJ despites being both university programs. Not around NYC itself but....

I'm also wondering about some programs in CT. I heard great things about Stamford/Columbia but recently found out that they were on a 2 year cycle for accreditation after receiving only a "continued accreditation" as opposed to "continued full accreditation". Any reason why?

Have you tried apgo.org for more information about programs? There's a wonderful residency directory there that is much more complete than Freida. They will give you details such as residents who left early/dropped out in past 5 years, # of surgeries residents do and so on....

Yes I have been on apgo.org but they have listed maybe a quater of ny community programs. i was wondering if that meant those are considered the "better" ny community programs or not?!? thats all i've really had to go on.

why were you told to avoid UMDNJ?? and which campus??

UMDNJ New Brunswick is on a 3 year cycle of evaluation by ACGME and they have not received full accreditation since 2006. (acgme web site)

That's all I know.

But then...so are many other programs! *Browsing the ACGME site looking at the report about the programs where I got interviews* 🙂

Cologist -- I know that you don't mean to spread misinformation about programs -- but I would like to clarify some of the info. you have written above. Continued accreditation means full accreditation. Most OB/GYN programs are accredited for 3-4 years (some may receive more; some may receive less). With respect to programs that are on probation-- it may be on probation for any number of reasons --some reasons may go to the quality of the program (e.g. program doesn't have many cases) and other reasons may be due to poor documentation (i.e. residents did not fully report the cases that they did). If you have concerns about the accreditation status of a program you are interviewing at -- just ask the program. Programs that are on probation are supposed to inform their interviewees that they are on probation and the reason(s) that they are on probation.

Thank you for the clarification. It makes more sense and I realized that after looking at several other programs.

I am applying primarily to NYC area programs and have some concerns about matching at a university program. I am an above average but not a "stellar" applicant. At this point I have interviews at Cornell, Einstein, SUNY Stony Brook, UConn, UMDNJ(Newark), and UMDNJ(New Brunswick). I am also interviewing at LIJ, North Shore, Beth Israel and a few university programs outside of the NYC area (which because of personal circumstances I will probably rank below NYC area programs -- even though some may be better programs).

I thought it was interesting that someone was given advice not to apply to UMDNJ programs, beacuse I was given the opposite advice. I was told that because NYC university programs are fairly competitive that UMDNJ was a good alternative for staying in the NYC area. I don't know anything about New Brunswick but I have a friend who is a fourth year at UMDNJ Newark (not applying for OB) who thinks the department is pretty good and that most of the residents are nice and fun to work with (at least during the OB clerkship). I do have some concerns about Beth Israel because it is on probation and I heard that Cornell was on probation last year. Does anyone have any info on these programs or any of the other programs mentioned above. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

What's the deal with this hospital? The website has little info. Can't find much on SDN.

so, i'm not from ny, but i applied to a few NY programs without really asking anyone about reputation and such. anyone know anything about NYMC westchester program or Stony Brook or ny downtown hospital or st lukes roosevelt? thanks!
