I keep hearing how awesome NY programs are in psychiatry. Which programs are the better ones? I know there are so many there, and I'd like to only apply to roughly 8 of them. I'm not a big fan of being worked to death; I'm looking for a place that teaches alot, has good atmosphere. thanks

Here are 8 NY programs, in descending order of quality/competitiveness (a highly subjective categorization):

Columbia
Cornell
NYU
Mt. Sinai
St. Lukes/Roosevelt
Beth Israel
North Shore/Long Island Jewish
Albert Einstein

I was curious as to why you listed Einstein below St. Lukes, BI, LIJ. I don't know enough to have my own opinion on the matter, just wondering abt your thought process

i dont know if i entirely agree with that order, but my differences would be pretty negligable, so i guess its not worth being nitpicky. but dont forget about st vincents, if you're looking for good hours, laid back atmosphere, and diverse psychopathology.

Any thoughts about St. Vincents in the Village? Good location, but what about the program?

what about SUNY upstate(syracuse). is that considered any good

I didn't interview there for various logistical reasons. I'm only responding b/c nobody has answered you on your other posts and i'm starting to feel sorry for you. 😳

For what it's worth, the program is supposed to be very good. The only way you'll know for sure is to interview there. IMHO, I'd say it's worth the trip. Sorry I can't be more helpful!

I can't speak for the other programs, but while Columbia and Cornell do have super teaching and positive atmospheres, their residents work hard and are given significant autonomy (ie, no one has literally been "worked to death," as you say, but you probably shouldn't apply to those two places unless you decide to become something of a big fan of work).

what about creedmoor hospital? i didn't see that on your list.

and SUNY Downstate? They seem to have an awesome program; at least they do from reading their comprehensive summary on their wedsite.

hey guys....havent been on this site in yrs!!! i m a 2nd yr at LIJ/Hillside and I have to vouch for my program. I dont know about whoever made that above list, but i ll refer you to us news and national report where we are now #22 best psych hospital in the country and as per a science mag, for the 90s, we were #17 most influencial psych hospital in the world! so theres many of amazing folks at hillside doing amazing things! so i will let you guys make the comparisons for yourselves, but among us, we think of ourselves at about 3-4th in the city. but as for me, why do i think its #1 in the world! haha...well it has the best balance of work, research, staff, and freedom that i love. i think our training is great, i think our classmates are awesome and fun! i think we have the best call system in the world...we do our own call schedule, so whenever i have knicks ticks or concert tick, guess who will never be on call!? me! and why is that important, cuz i can months in advance plan my fun...i m a big boxing/bball fan...so i have ticks to both in nov and i didnt put my name on the call schedule for that day! simple..i think all of my classmmates want to be really good schrinks! i got published in primary psychiatry as a first yr if you re looking for people to start you on that path. i also have a big study studying ziprasidone and caridac side effects in children. We have 1/7 sites for prodromal research in schizophrenia, so you can work with that and do fun genetic stuff...i think for me bottom line is if you want a little more hardcore, then maybe you should go to cornell/columbia, but i work to have fun, and with the free time from fun, i do research, so i feel like i m living the life...lastly though, if you re moving from another city and want to come to ny for ny, maybe lij will not be the best place b/c its 15 miles of manhattan...i live in brooklyn and commute so i enjoy it..thats one way, but if you want to come to lij and want to live by the hospital AND want to hang in the city during the week, that can tale a lots of effort! if anyone has questions, ask! thanks!

wanna tell me how to match at LIJ? its my dream............... 😍

Hi can anybody tell my about SUNY Stony brook psychiatry program.

Interviewed @ LIJ & Stony Brook years back.

All of this is from memory that's a few years old so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

A buddy of mine from medschool, lost contact who is now a fellow at NYU went to Stony Brook. He went on to Brown for a child fellowship. He said he loved the program. The program has a very good mix of both rural & urban cases. E.g. they had their own child inpatient, eating disorder units-both of which are rare for a psyche program to have. It has a very diverse mix of various clinical cases & has very good research going on with some very good equipement (e.g. PET scans). The facilities are also top notch. The dept services the entire county, and this gives them plenty of diverse cases. If you compare programs that serve an entire county vs a specific part of a city, you'll often see a better diversity in the former (at least from my experience).

LIJ: heard good things about it when I applied there. The interview gave me a good impression. Their research & facilities weren't as good as Stony Brook's but they were still good. Also has a good mix of rural & urban cases--being located right out of NYC.

One thing that may have unfairly prejudiced my judgement at LIJ was a resident there gave a very scathing review of the program on scutwork.com. I didn't know whether or not to think this guy was a troller, had a chip on his/her shoulder or if it was justified. I brought this up to the program director and he said he knew about that review and said he believes he knew the person who put it up and that it was not a fair interview.

Of the residents I met from LIJ, they too agreed that it was a good experience, which lead me to think perhaps that reviewer was being unfair. That specific review had been removed from scutwork's reviews.

Only bad thing I could see with both programs was the cost of living was extremely high in their areas. At the time LIJ advertised to me that it was the highest paying psyche residency program in the country. I figured it was true if the program director mentioned it. However the cost of living in the area too is very high.

Hi can anybody tell my about SUNY Stony brook psychiatry program.

I also interviewed at Stony Brook. I agree with Whopper. It seemed like a good solid program. Their child program seemed strong as well. You should look into this yourself to verify, but one of the things that turned me off was that they have a low pass rate on the boards. Of course, there are a lot of factors that contribute to a low pass rate that has abosuletly nothing to do with the quality of the program. But I interviewed at so many good programs that I had to use something to distinguish them apart...

Anyone interview there in the past? Any thoughts? Thanks.

Hi again,

Does anyone have any information on SUNY Downstate. I know very little about the program. I have heard they are great for community psychiatry. I also love the location. Any info would be much appreciated.

thanks!

what about st.vincents in manhattan..any thoughts about their program???

Anyone have more info on New York Med College-Westchester/Valhalla, OR Albert Einstein-Long Island Jewish Hospital?

Any chance of my matching into Albert Einstein-LIJ or NYMC-Westchester/Valhalla? I got the interviews, but...

92 on Step 1, but I'm taking Step 2 really late... Dec 31, just in time for the score to come out in Jan. I think my score will drop to the 80's for Step 2. 🙁

I was psych major in college, worked for 1 yr doing psychology research with my professor, had 2 research posters in psychology, and worked for about 7 months as a psychiatry technician at a university hospital before going to med school.

I'm a caribbean FMG/IMG, US citizen, US clinical rotations. I didn't honor my psych core rotation b/c my school requires u to honor the shelf exam as well, and i didn't honor the shelf 🙁. Though, I got 2 excellent LOR's from the psychiatrists I worked with. I haven't yet taken any psych electives, although am scheduled for one at St Luke's Roosevelt in February. No psych research in med school either.

What are my chances? 🙁
I don't know what your chances are, but my impression is that if they interview you, they are interested in you, right? I don't think they would waste their time interviewing someone they didn't think was good enough for their program.

LIJ is supposed to be a very good program. I have heard it is on par with some of the 2nd tier NYC programs like Montefiore and Mt. Sinai, but gets less recognition because it's outside the city.

Good luck 🙂

I don't have much knowledge of the NYMC Psychiatry program, but I can tell you this.

Its located in Vahalla, which is something of a desolate area. NYC is about 1/2 an hr away, so you're still close to a mecca of several things to do. Still living in an area like that has its disadvantages. Despite that its close to NYC--you will need a car in Valhalla.

I interviewed at the program & I did some graduate school at NYMC. This was 4 & 10 years ago so I'm sure things have changed.

Overall the program looked good. They also required residents to do 1 research project which I thought was a good idea. The residents there seemed happy. They seemed to be easy to relate to, and wanted candidates that were friendly. They were also IMG friendly. Most of their residents at the time were IMGs.

The cafeteria food was bad. I don't think the food was free. I remember during grad school, people driving out to lunch and dreading the cafeteria food. Food might not seem so important, but if you're 1st year resident doing call, and there's nothing else to eat--yes it is important for morale.

Unfortunately this is all I can tell you. I don't know anyone who went to the program so I can't give you more info. Overall I got a good impression. It wasn't my first choice, but it was to the point where I did consider it and put it somewhere about 3-5 on my Match list of about 10.

Hi all!! I am new to this forum and was hoping to get some feedback about the Beth Israel program in Manhattan. Anyone interviewing there/ranking them??? Any info is appreciated.

Check the post-interview thread. I'm pretty sure people have reviewed BI on there 🙂

Necrobump, was Valhalla really considered desolate 17 years ago?
