Hi there,

Sorry for those who've read this posting in other forums, but I really want many and varied perspectives! I've accepted downstate but have recently been accepted to upstate off of the hp waiting list. Although I was set on downstate b/c I would be closer to father and boyfriend and didn't think there would be much difference between the two SUNY's in terms of education or residency placement. But I heard differently.

I want to make the best choice for my next step, which is getting into a competitive residency program. I do not know what field I want to go into, although I'm thinking of Emergency Medicine, but its always good to prepare for the future. I heard from a downstate grad that it's easier for upstate grads to get into competitive programs because downstate students have to compete with other NYC med school students. Is there any truth to this?

All advice/suggestions will be very helpful!

Well, if you're looking to stay in the NYC area downstate would certainly be better, but you will be competing with the other NYC schools (but you would be no matter which you went to). As a Syracuse native I would have picked Downstate over Upstate, but I didn't actually attend either!

If you're definitely applying to EM, I would think Downstate would be the better match for you. They have one of the best ED residency programs in the city, they are very much involved with the medical school curriculum, every student rotates through their ED, and as Lochesi puts it " he will make an EM animal out of you."
