Hi everyone,

First-year clinical psychology student here and embarking on my first round of NYNJADOT externship applications! I am looking for any and all advice in this process. Sites you recommend? Sites you caution to stay away from? What did you put in your cover letters? What were the interviews like? Is match day really as nerve-wracking as it sounds? Any and all info you can provide is greatly appreciated.

I’m glad I never had to worry about applying for unpaid externships for my training 😕 I just asked the clinical supervisor for a gig and that was it, lol.

The sites all have to meet a minimum standard to be part of NYNJADOT. What kind of training interests do you have? There's everything from neuropsych to psychoanalytic institutes to prisons on there.

I would really talk to your DCT, advisor, and more senior classmates about this as well. In my program, people freely provide examples of cover letters and CVs and advisors are open to looking at application materials. My cover letters basically explain why I am interested in the position and what experience I have that would make me a good fit for this training opportunity.

Interviews will vary across sites. The description on the webpage will provide detailed information about their interview procedures. Some are individual. Some are group with multiple candidates interviewing at once. I went to 1 once where all the clinical staff interviewed me at once as a group.

Yes, match day sucks because of the anticipatory anxiety, especially if you have something preventing you from being able to access your email for a while. If you don't match, there is the post-match vacancy list. I remember some good sites were on there last year.

Hi!

As a more advanced student who’s about to do the process for the 2nd time, I’m happy to talk with you over PM about specific sites. There are just so many, so if you want to message me the ones you are thinking about I can give you my thoughts 🙂
The match day really does suck. For some people, it goes totally smoothly and they get an offer from their first choice right at 9 AM and immediately accept and email all their other places withdrawing. Other people are waiting all day (and into the next morning) hoping to get an offer at their top choice, and in turn, holding a spot at a lower choice that someone else is waiting for.

my advice would be just try to remember that everyone will end up somewhere-it’s literally a required part of our training. If you don’t get an offer through the match process, your program will figure something out for you. Good luck!
